I know that you can hire fancy bike bags from the likes of Cycle Lab etc.

Yes cheapest currently is going to work out at about R600 to rent with a dep of R2400 and then I still need to pay for transport from and back to jhb so not worth while.

@Tmobile investigated the box but the box will be opened and closed quite a few times.dont know it the box will last as it will going on the back of a bakkie for some times.also the box dont fit in the bakkie as my mtb buddy also uses a box,so i guess it will have to be SW.

Got you. I usually just tape the box and if you're gonna be "handling" the bike yourself you don't even have to close it "all the time" but if it doesn't fit onto your bakie...... I don't like the idea of my bike in a bag being handled by airport baggage handling staff so I almost always go with the box. Only ever used the bike bag once and if you weren't so far I could've just borrowed you one. Good luck and enjoy your hols.

Wots a Niner? or a cube?

Trek won numerous TDF's

Merida won so many consecutive word cups, one cannot even keep track any more.

Wow, this is an incredible revelation.

Anyone keen on buying a Ritchey or swap one for a Trek seeing that Merida is a Scrabble players bike ?

Dude, it's like with anything, whether it be sport or recreation, until you get into it and do a little research you are easily lead astray. Hell, before I "got into" mountain biking I too was easily fooled into seeing a front folk with shocks and thinking that this must be the real deal.

Must be incredible to see people with shocks.

In any case what is a front fork with shocks ?

You say before you got in to mountain biking ?

Looks to me like you haven't even started yet.

Also don't forget, it's those same stupid Vaalies with luminous surf shorts that stimulates the economy where you got your arrogance from.

Walked in a SW a few months ago. Was looking at prices for darts and dart boards. I also looked at the cycling kit. They were insanely expensive compared to any of the LBS in my area.

Shops like SW is proof that people in South Africa don't know how to shop for the best price.

The price of the First Accent gear is more expensive or almost the same at Sportsman then the LBS right next door at the Pavillion. How can that be?

Think anything. Golf clubs. Know nothing and as long as it has nine irons and a few woods you assume this must be a mamba set of clubs. Or those Vaalies who come to Durbs on holiday and buy themselves those luminous baggies because they are somehow fooled into thinking that is how surfers dress.

Unfortunately there are huge markets that prey on these folk. They manufacture "replicas" of the real deals and sell them to the masses.

Whats wrong with luminous baggies?

Yeah this is all true, we are currently expanding our store and moving the entire shop around. We realise cycling is i think at the moment the biggest growing sport? But when you pop in ask one of our sales assistants to help you out and they will galdly do it, other wise ask for myself, Dylan, by name. Thanks

Oh and yes we do competiteive shopping as much as we can. obviously this does not come into effect when another store is running a promotion. We are trying our best to be the best. Our prices are not bad considering, and our service is improving. Well at least I know this at our fourways store.

our new store will have Merida and Trek and our normal names such as Mongoose and Schwinn, we have a whole range of good bikes now. Example, the Merida big nine Carbon, its R30k, but full carbon, XT components accross the board. its a really good bike at a decent price.

our specialist mechanic has just come back from training at the Merida and omnico factory, he can strip a bike down completely, including bearings and all the nitty grittys. This will be another added value to our team. 5 of our cycling departments team members ride with me every thursday, so that they can get a feel for what we go through out in the bush miles away from anything. they know the importance of breaks and gears being perfect, tyre pressure, comfort. Its something small but hopefully it gives you the customers a better experience in store when the staff know what you talking about.

Hope to see you guys in my store soon.

Care to elaborate on the nitty grittys? Can't remember ever replacing or servicing these items on my bikes. Maybe the fact that they are missing on my bikes is the cause of me being so slow on the trials.

I don't think any of your staff are under any illusion on the importance of breaks, we've all experienced them having their break when we've needed service. Do they only learn this riding with you or are you trying to teach them not to have them as often in store?

It's going to be interesting to see how customer's needs are met by the retail experience,

A whole range of good bikes? Are you a masochist? Inviting ridicule from your fellow hubbers? These bikes are what are termed Walmart specials. No one here is going to be fooled by your buyers attempt to justify a profit opportunity based on selling ordinary and passing it off as great.

Lovely when big retail tries to take advantage of a growing sport to make money rather than add value.

Sportsmans Warehouse, Outdoor Warehouse, ... are all part of MassMart Stores, and ...

No, they're not.

Together with First Ascent, they are in the Holdsport group - a company that delisted a couple of years ago, following a PE deal, but subsequently relisted a year or so ago...

Welcome to the Hub, you going to get a lot of flack from some Hubber's best get used to having a thick skin but you will be in the same category as the likes of Cyclelab and Cajee's all which have had their share, some justifiable some not.

I ask him how does he remove the cassette on bikes that he fixes. He held up a hammer and a screwdriver. "One hit, is all it takes" he said.

Bloody hell! Never supported any of these shops and will not either in future. They good enough for T shirts... that is about it!

If you don't mind self service as all the staff are finding out the importance of breaks, as quoted by the store guy above.

I had nitty grittys on my bike the once. Just gave it a good wash, and they came right off, no problem.
