The ratchet in the rear hub hooks intermittently and pulls my chain and derailleur forward. Can the internal mechanism be serviced or must I replace the whole hub?

In layman's terms the little thing that makes the 'click' 'click' 'click' noise is getting stuck so the cassette is rolling forward with the wheel.

I had something similar on my DH bike (Hope Pro II rear hub)

It was like a fixie.

The problem was that when the rear axle was tightened the compresion would cause the freehub body to push hard up against the main body of the hub and they would turn together.

If you take your wheel off and turn the cassette, can it "free wheel"?

No. You have to buy a whole new bike.

I had the same problem wife my wife bike that is a GT. Take the wheel and the cluster off. Pour some oil between the cluster housing and the cluster and spin it. There is thin grove where the oil must run into and a lot of oil wil go to waiste, but eventually oil will get in. That sorted the GT out untll now! I hope my explanation make sense thou :-) :-)

Some times you get some dirt or sand stuck between the free wheel and the hub. Remove the free wheel clean the two faces and re assemble, should solve the problem.
