cji Posted June 3, 2012 Share Event Name: Rijk Tulbagh MTB Race & FunrideWhen: 30 June 2012Where: Tulbagh, Western CapeCategory: MTBNEW EVENT in Tulbagh! Traverse the scenic Tulbagh valley from its town centre across the slopes of its Western Obiqua Mountains, Northern Winterhoek mountains, eastern and southern Witzenberg mountains; on farmroads through orchards, forests, nature and game reserves, across mountain tracks and single tracks. Some of the routes will go over parts of the ABSA Cape Epic and MTN National MTB routes but on this race, the routes will traverse all of Tulbagh’s surrounding mountains in a clockwise direction. The 70 km will test the fit and technically experienced rider with over 1700 m in climbs on a variety of farm roads, 4 x 4 (jeep) track & single-track with spectacular views. The route is designed to provide variety and cover as much of the valley as possible by avoiding too much of a zig-zag route across similar terrain. The 40 km is by no means a cakewalk! Following the same farm, mountain and single track routes as the 75 km but cutting out some of the heaviest climbs and detours but with over 700 m in climbs it still offers a varitable challenge from a perspective of endurance, strength and technical skills for the average rider. The 20 km ride is untimed and one that focusses on those who like to ride but don’t have as much time to build up their stamina and strength. Aimed at the novice and young riders it will still provide a safe but good challenge. Please note that riders under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. DISTANCES 70 km; 40 km; 20 km STARTING TIMES 75 km @ 08h30; 40 km @ 09h00; 20 km @ 09h30 VENUE Disapark, Tulbagh ENQUIRIES John Brokaar PHONE 083 952 5448 EMAIL info@rtps.co.za or john@welbedachtreserve.co.za PRIZE GIVING/CUT-OFF 15h00 PRE-ENTRIES CLOSE 28 June 2012 ONLINE ENTRIES www.pedalpower.org.zaGo to Event Page
Jorrie Posted June 26, 2012 Share Hi Hubbers, We've added some nice new single track to the route and with the good weather forecast hope to see some of you on Saturday. Bring the family with, as it is the Christmas in winter festival with lots to see and do in town. Most of the wine farms got live music and lots to offer to the hungry and thirsty cyclists! MTBeer Posted June 26, 2012 Share I hope it is actually 75km. Did the MTN ride there last year - advertised as 72km, ended up being 82km. Jeez the last 10k's were kuk.
Jorrie Posted June 26, 2012 Share We've made the long route a bit easier without compromising on views or single track. It's more or less 65km with 1500m climbing.
Stevief Posted June 26, 2012 Share We've made the long route a bit easier without compromising on views or single track. It's more or less 65km with 1500m climbing. That sounds perfect to me, i have not had anytime to ride the past few weeks so i will suffer for 65km but not die for 75km. Cant wait to get on the bike again.

Jorrie Posted June 28, 2012 Share CapeLandy, there's some nice fast flat sections between the climbs, sure you'll make it! The 40km is also a nice route if you want to downgrade! Everyone welcome to join us for the afterparty at Theuniskraal! http://www.facebook.com/find-friends/browser/?rpix=1#!/theuniskraalwines/app_208195102528120

Everyone welcome to join us for the afterparty at Theuniskraal! http://www.facebook....208195102528120 Hi Jorrie, I am a triathlete doing his first proper MTB race - I have done a couple of Xterra's but never a out and out MTB race. Would i be fine to do the 40km as a reasonably fit roadie? Thanks

Stevief Posted June 30, 2012 Share Maybe it was me or that superglue mud but i found the 70km ride to be bloody hard.
kvdp Posted June 30, 2012 Share Yes,mud was unreal. If pedalstroke stopped,so did motion! But overall it was a very enjoyable event, and was worth the long commute back and forth.
Jorrie Posted July 1, 2012 Share Sorry for all the mud, took some muddy st out just before the race, but unfortunately winter in the cape equals mud...Well done to everyone completing the 70km,not the easiest 70 out there. Had some nice feedback after the race, any thoughts on making it even better next year?
Flowta Posted July 1, 2012 Share Just came across this now. I'm sorry I missed it. Used to work at Waterval in Tulbagh from time to time, used to take my bike with sometimes.Definitely great potential for great rides in the area.
