Alto de Letras, the longest climb on Earth! Its an 80km monster in Columbia, elevation change of about 3800m. Thats an average gradient of 4%, which may not seem like a lot, but for 80km it must be quite a grind!

An average time for the climb is around 5 hours. This is the ideal place for any decent cyclist to go and test their mettle, I know I would kill for the chance!

Yikes!

Should I bring my asthma pump along...

As every year you can choose between four wonderfuls tracks Details on tracks:the ULTRA / starting at Kirchzarten, the longest and most challenging track with 116 kilometers and 3.150 m difference in altitude. The Power Track / starting at Hinterzarten, was established in 2006, this track is 88 km long and has 2.300 m difference in altitude. The Marathon / starting at Kirchzarten, is the Classic distance with 77 km and 2.000 m difference in altitude. The Short Track / starting at Hinterzarten, Short Track is the shortest track; 43 km long and 900 m difference in altitude. All tracks arrive at Kirchzarten. In 2011there will be a new distance called Speed-Track (52,4 Km / 1.130 m elevation), it starts in Todtnauberg and arrives - as all other distances - in the sport stadium of Kirchzarten.

An hour out of Cape Town, the route to the Stetteynskloof Dam was a very pleasant discovery. 14km from the gate to the dam , up the valley on a dirt road. Climb one final hill and then drop down to the dam wall. On this day there was not a breath of wind ,with the mountains reflected on the water's surface. An ideal training route or a quiet dirt road to ride with the family. Go out and find it.

It's amazing what you can find within an hour's drive from home.

Men's please.

On Home Turf:

On our doorstep we have Table Mountain to ride on. Some challenging jeep tracks with awesome views. Superb Night riding to the Blockhouse to check out the City Lights.

Go to www.tablemountainbikers.co.za to see what we are all about.

Until I can figure out how to get my video to display, you'll have to click on the link. the dam that winds into the valley that can't be mentioned. As the final stage of the freedom challenge this has mythical status. That is not one place i actually would go and ride my bike out of choice.

Me think that's Tourmalet....

Man, I wish I could ride this trail every day! The drop into the Umkomaas Valley is absolutely spectacular. Over 20 km of meticulously groomed smooth and flowing downhill singletrack coupled with breathtaking views of the mighty Umkomaas river as it snakes its way accross the valley floor. Think I left my soul somewhere in that valley...

22 days from Lhasa (Tibet) to Kathmandu (Nepal)

1100 km, vertical gain 52000 m, climbing 5 mountain passes over 5000 m, visiting Everest Base Camp at 5200 m, cycling amongst 8000 m peaks in the Himalayas, and then a 4600 m descent in 40 km to Kathmandu !

Pity the Tibetan borders are closed at the moment, courtesy of the Chinese ...

(Ladies) I can't choose one place! But here are what my ultimate riding destinations will have in common:

1) Big climbs = big scenery

http://travellingtwo.com/gallery2/d/48528-2/Baralacha_La-descent.jpg

2) but not too much of this.. I'd like to keep my fingers

http://data.whicdn.com/images/10791755/ARTI_bicycle_touring_winter-1_thumb.jpgcyclocamping.com

3) good camping spots

4) good street food

and 5) friendly people!

But now that I've read this thread I'm adding Squier's Umkomaas singletrack to the top end of the list. May we all get to our various theres (there's?) sooner than later.
