Anyone have any comments on Jeeps, I am looking at buying a new car and the Jeep is on the shortlist.

It will have a full motor plan but what is the service like?

Any hubbers with Jeeps or exeprince with Jeep that can comment?.

Hi Luke

I had a Jeep Patriot. Even though it is the baby of the family it went everywhere. It was very capable as a soft-roader and quite surprising in the rougher stuff too. It also came with the standard motor plan which was great, until I wanted to extend the motor plan. It worked out more than R1 per km. I do 40 000 km a year. So for an extra R40k a year I went for a new car. Now here came the shocking bit. The Jeep lost a lot of its value and I came to the realisation that they have no second hand value. This limited my buying options when buying a new car as I didn't want to pay in.

It was also a bit heavy on fuel and was quite sluggish for a 2.4. Optional extras were also a fortune as everything needs to be imported from the States (only Mopar products installed by authorised dealership will ensure that warrantees are honoured).

Agreed. Had the Wrangler and same issues as above. Also some parts need to be ordered in like the cable that controls the heater. Mine took 4 weeks to arrive.

Thanks good feedback.

I am looking at a low km 2nd hand 2011 model, so the car has already lost the value and it is priced R30k below the new price and has only 6900km's

The motor plan has been extended to 5 years 100 000kms so I would be well covered from a maintance perspective

The car I am looking at is the Jeep Compass 2l manual, the probelm is that if I comapre the specs of this car to the KIA this car has more features but is R70k less

The question is will a new KIA loose as much resale over time?

Also seems that the JEEP problems are on the Wrangler/RUBICON etc and the new Luxury SUV type cars are not as bad?

I think it depends on who you speak to. All the Jeep owners I spoke to recon it was one of the best cars they have even owned.

I had the privilege of getting a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overlander to test drive for a long weekend (Actually used it to go to the Panorama Tour), the experience left me convinced without a doubt that this was the car for me, I also spoke to quite a few people who had previously owned Jeeps and feedback was generally positive apart from low power and heavy on fuel with the petrol models, but this is the case with any offroad SUV.

based on this I purchased a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overlander but opted for the Diesel which has pretty impressive torque and power.. I looked at the X5, Tourag, Prado etc.. and the Jeep for its price had far better features and was better value for money in the end.

I've had no issues with the vehicle and the features are endless.

Jeep has come a long way with their vehicles over the last 5 years and their new models are fantastic hence their massive sales drive at the moment, doing some research on the net will confirm this statement.

Only thing that put me off a bit was the 3 year maintenance plan but I almost never keep a car that long anyway.

Problem is they don't have a lot of stock at the moment but they should still get back to you, if you PM me your details I can put you into contact with someone at Jeep who will definitely be able to assist. For the record I am in no way affiliated to Jeep, just in a position to help because of a contact I have there.

I had a Jeep Cherokkee. Liked all the bells & wistles. However if something breaks then you are in for it in a big way!!!!!

The suspension needed constant fastening...unless you like riding around in a squeeky, noisy car.

It was also worth almost nothing as soon as it was out of its service plan. People know how expensive they are to maintain.

Bottom line...I will never get a jeep again...
