Grade 6 - wow

GEORGY TURNER INITIATIVE

While on holiday in the Drakensburg , I was touched by the amount of children walking to school every day, for

very long distances. I decided to donate the bicycle I had taken on holiday with me, to one of the schools.

The children at a local school all entered a lucky draw and a Grade 5 boy called Ndumiso, won the bike. There

was much clapping and cheering and he was overwhelmed! For these children a bicycle is something they only

dream about, as most are from very needy families who live very far from their school.

This was only the beginning, and the pictures of Ndumiso's obvious delight inspired me and my family to try

collect more old or unused bicycles.

With the unbelievable support and help of my fellow Grade 6 classmates and their parents at St Peter’s,

another forty bikes were collected and sent to the Drakensburg for distribution between the nine schools in the

area. The next bike collection has begun and I hope to send many more!

wow, that is impressive.

when I was that age I spent all my time burning paper aeroplanes and blowing up matchbox cars and plastic soldiers with tom thumbs.

and of course riding my bike....permatubes.

Great initiative, especially considering the kid will only be about 12 years old.

....and from Joburg nogal......he's going to be eaten alive in grade 8 unless he moves to Apetown. ;)

Jokes aside, it is essential to teach children empathy and to encourage doing some kind of commmunity service. His parents should be very proud because they must have done something right.

I don't know when letter is from. The reason I say this is that a year or so ago, here in the central berg, the local school children were given yellow bikes. There were plenty, maybe 50 or 60? Anyway they were everywhere for a while. Now?? I haven't seen one in ages. I don't know if they broken or stolen or whatever, but is very disheartening to see them disappear so quickly.

But a lovely gesture from the kid in that letter

hmmm that would be sad. the letter is from today but I guess the intial collection could well have been a yr ago. Wouldn't have expected all the bikes to be the same though as I assume the kids donated their own / old bikes.

Will find out more about it and post next week.
