SLX = X7

Zee = X7+X9 (short & med cage)

XT= X9

Saint = X0 DH

XTR =X0

?= XX

 

Shimano has yet to catch up :-)

As for my stable...

 

Bike 1 (4X) - Saint 9sp short cage... Love it!

Bike 2 (DH) - SLX 9sp med cage... value for money, but not ideal for DH

Bike 3 (AM) - X0 9sp long cage... Amazing!

Bike 4 (DH) - X0 10sp DH... dunno yet... bike still on its way ;)

Funny how XT is always justified as 'just as good as XTR', when those making these claims really knows it is not close to XTR, not in performance, not in weight, and obviously not in price. XT is good, but it will never be XTR.

Everyone who says XTR, is not considering an average rider doesn't want to replace chain-rings and cassettes every 5 minutes.

Please don't let anyone make you imagine that there is anything much more than weight and serious bling between today's SHIMANO groupsets.

 

XTR has a chain-slap reducer built into it, from 2011.

Note - I buy XT derailleurs and SLX cranks. They're not my limiting factor in performance :) and usually you're getting very recent technology that's passed down from previous-model XTR.

The best groupset is the one on the bike your riding down some awesome single track.

The biggest problems that I have found/done/seen are maintenance and abuse related. Not even top of the range derailuers want to work under very heavy load ( ask 2010 tdf winner for a reference ) .

Dirty cable housings are not a problem only on electronic shifters. Same goes for stretched cables

Worn chains aka chain stretch and the subsequent damage to blades and cassettes are also known to affect shifting performance.

The whole religious debate about lube.

If it makes a noise pour something on it .

If it is dirty clean it.

If it is broken replace it.

As far as weight it concerned 90% ( made up percentage ) of rider would gain more by loosing it on the engine than by cutting it from the bike.

Spend more time training and less time in bed responding to forum posts :)

Well spotted Tank. No one else seems to have noticed that our new member is actually a Comedian, posting about groupset choice in the "Group Rides" forum. He will fit in well around here... Ride what you want to, just don't fit Japanese to Italian....

It's not like years ago where there was massive differences between them, at the cost of production and efficiency, many parts are exactly the same except for the finish/material being used.

 

If you look at the 2012 deore, slx, xt and xtr you will see it evident in many parts such as brakeset's, shifters, mech's, etc etc.

 

If you are starting off, there is nothing wrong with a bit of a mix and match, for example, my "dream recipe" for a beginner who want's a great SHIMANO groupset would be:

 

Deore M596 2012 Brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

SLX Front Mech

Deore M591 Shifters

 

 

Then, if you want something a bit more blingy:

 

 

SLX 2012 Brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

SLX Front Mech

SLX Shifters

 

If you want something with street cred:

 

XT 2012 Brakeset, i-Tech Rotors

XT i-Spec Shifters mounted to brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

XT Front Mech

 

If you want almost racer/sponsored, flashy

 

XT 2012 Brakeset, i-Tech Rotors

XT i-Spec Shifters mounted to brakeset

XTR Chainset

XTR Rear Mech

If you have loads of cash full XTR.

 

Best summary I have read.

 

I went with full SLX - and after many serious bails have broken nothing yet! Road mate's bikes with XT / XTR, the difference is minimal. Possibly biggest thing is slower front derailer change on SLX? Well unless you racing in the Olympics, will not affect anything!

Never ever buy XTR unless you're really loaded...

 

Durability on XTR / XX sucks and maintenance items (such as a jockey sprocket) is 4 times that of the XT or SLS / X9 or X7 equivalent.

 

And really, if you're good enough that a few grams will make a difference, then your sponsors should make these decisions for you.

I would do this:

 

XT brakes with Ice rotors (people have been singing their praises)

SLX crank (not so important)

XTR rear shifter (shifters make the biggest difference to shifting)

XT delailer (I noticed a difference when I changed from SLX)

Deore front derailer.

 

Of course they normally sell it sets, in which case:

 

SLX - fine

XT - worth it if you can afford the extra money.

XTR - you plan to win races or earn more than R1 million pa.

XT SLX XTR meant nothing to me but as i continue to meet MTBers i see the have XT SLX XTR on their and when i ask why do they use a groupset i never got a good answer .

Ride what you want to, just don't fit Japanese to Italian....

 

Our little Campy friends have a bit of a problem in the mtb department ... oh wait ... they dont have a mtb department.

 

Our Pina friends seem to favor Japanese over American for the Dogma XC 29er and FV5 ... so Im happy but they must be committing a cardinal sin or breaking the law or some unheard off sillyness!

 

Luckily you know my motto by now, I own it, I ride it, I put whatever the hell I like on it and the rest can lick my chain.

 

So, ride what you want to!
