Free body (hub) not engaging - American Classic 26"

I replaced the bearings in AM classic hubs last night and also snapped the spring that engages the clutch plate, I also bent it up again, works ok, but it sticks when I pedal backwards slightly, or when the wheel is "freewheeling" will this do damage? Any idea how I can fix it?

Anyone know where I can get a new free hub body?

On a positive note, I now know how to make AM Classic hubs sound like Chris King hubs

Mackie just get up to JHB and we will fix it over a few beers after we have killed you on the trails....... Just use it like an SS bike no chain suck then or back pedal required.....

After reading the whole thread, I realise where I went wrong, I used a side cutter to trim the spring, so the spring has a "V" shaped cut and probably some burrs around the cut, which is probaly catching the clutch plate on the return, so not problem, will trim it properly at some point, other than that the AM Classic hubs are very easy to service, paid school fees last night, I now at least know exactly how everything works.

Hope your going to file it and make it square BEFORE you come up to JHB cause we are going to ride circles around you... Take no prisoners this weekend Last man is buying the beers and we all know a scotsman hates to loose and pay for something thumbdown.gif

Glad you got it sorted. Nothing like that sick feeling in your gut when you are doing some DIY and something goes wrong or you have spare parts like a washer whistling.gif

The mack attack sent me a vid last night of a beautifull spinning backwheel with fresh greased bearing....only issue is it spins both ways. hahahahha

That is how you learn....next time you know, I am moer scared ito opening my freewheel, I have images of stuff skieting out all over the show.

I know this thread has been dead for a while but I'm hoping someone sees this (if not I'll re-post). I have the exact same problem on my self-maintained (well-maintained) AM Classic hub. In this case however the clutch plate has simply worn away after several years of riding. I've bent the spring to no avail, the clutch is so worn it will not engage. Anyone know where I can get a replacement? Any other advice would be appreciated.

Easy to fix.

Remove the axle ends and pull the freehub body off. Don't worry, nothing will jump out.

Now identify the black rubber seal - it is a large black ring that seals between the hub and the freewheel body. Gently lever it out.

Now the mechanism will be exposed, albeit full of gunk.

Remove everything by hand, wipe, spray with parts cleaner and get it nice and clean. There are four pawls in there and you'll notice that they are undamaged. They are not the problem.

Look at the freehub body at the hub end and identify the spring that's mentioned here.Have a loook how it engages with the wheel side and what it does. It will be obvious. Bend it out a bit and have a good look at the tip. If it is worn at an angle, consider cutting the worn tip off so that you start with a nice sharp, fresh 90 degree tip. It is very hard, so don't try a sidecutter but use a cut-off tool on a dremel. If you don't have a dremel, bend it nicely and hope.

Grease it all up, replace the seal, push the freehub body back on and fit the axle ends.

Voila. New wheel. No need to send it to Cape Town or Cairo for a R600 fix.

I can't see how a wheel specialist could not fix that in 20 minutes but there you have it.

Had this same problem on my 2 month old "wide lightnings". Had to file the tip of the spring at an angle , so that it would "grip"the cam plate better . Mine always engaged , I just found that I got a clicking sound once the pawls had engaged and seated properly . I couldnt figure it out until LBS took it apart and we compared it to another freebody . Havent ridden it properly yet , but so far so good
