Hi

 

I'm having trouble setting the gears. The limit screws are perfect but I can't get the fine adjustments right. The gear cable was replaced 150km ago. If I start off on the high gears, it changes up and down perfectly form 8 to 2 but once I change up to the 1st gear (biggest cog) then I cant change down again and if I adjust the barrel, it changes down but not up.

 

so am I doing something wrong or is this hanger bent?

Take the hanger off and put a straight edge on it

A bent hanger doesn't present like the symptoms you describe.

 

A bent hanger will allow the gears to shift (from small sprocket to large sprocket) but shifting will get progressively worse the further you go from the small sprocket. In other words, gear 1-2 will shift perfectly, the next one a little less satisfactory etc etc. Coming down will display the reverse.

 

What you describe is typical of friction in the cable system somewhwere. Replace the cable, make sure things aren't kinked etc etc.

 

Only the derailer spring assists downshift and if there is friction, it won't do so with a smart snap.

 

Change the cable.

Some times it is not the hanger that is bent but rather the arm (cage) of the derailleur. If You have a spare hanger try putting that on to test your theory that the hanger itself may be bent.

 

Or if all of the above fails pack up your tools and take it to a bike shop were the owner is the mechanic (not some lacky who just works at a bike shop and is now called the mechanic :whistling: ) and get them to solve it for you....

Hi,

 

 

I damaged my chain while pedalling the other eve on a night ride.

 

The one link was slightly bent open and it affected my gearing at times, up and down. Chain would apear to jump now and then.

 

 

May add, from your pic it does look like the bottom wheel runs inwards, not sure if the top wheel is inline and bottom slightly out how this would affect you’re gearing since there are some play between links that will allow to sort that issue a bit. In a case like that there will be some wear and tear, def not the ideal situation.

Assuming you are not using a wide angle lens, that sir, is a bent hangar. Your description of symptoms however points to settings as JB has pointed out.

 

Start with hanger though, it sure looks out of whack!

From the pic it looks like the derailleur cage is bent.

 

Ah yes, could be the cage.. The lower jockey wheel should be directly below the upper, inline with the chain on the cassette.

Thanks for the advice

 

I will get a new cable. The cage is bent, it's not the angle of the pic. Will take it to the lbs and see if they can straighten it / replace the cage.
