29ers rule - Olympic 1st and 3rd, 4th, 5th .... etc

Who has heard the rumour that Constantiaberg Hospital (the closest emergency ward to Tokai give or take a governement hosiptal or 2) has seen many an accident involving 29er riders of late.

The explanation I have been given is that 9ers are so much faster than sixers, the poor 9er owners don't realise this and crash when they hit jumps and obstacles at the insane speeds now possible with this totally incredible new technology.

The other explanation I have heard is that many niner riders are dirt roadies - perhaps recent converts to mtb and think the big roady like wheels will keep him/her safe no matter what they ride into, and learn the hard way you still need some skills.

Or perhaps, neither of the above, and the usual 9er geometry does not lend itself to drops and airtime... :excl:

Opinions please

Gotta love another niner thread

But if you did all that AND had a 29er it would even be better. Common lets cut the crap, 29ERS RULE!!!!

Sponsors RULE!!!! - and enjoy the larger "size" of their bank accounts due to all the additional sales to people that already had a good enough bike.

We will never know what the mix of wheel sizes would have been if the riders were allowed to choose for themselves.

In the words of that modern philosopher. Tyler Durden. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need!

I am beginning to think this is not totally true. Think about it, every sponsor want his rider(s) to win for obvious reasons. These days there seems to be very small gaps between 1st, 2nd 3rd,... (just look at the Olympics XC race for an example). Therefore sponsors really have no choice with regards to which bikes they sponsor, they sponsor what they think is best for the race. Let’s face it, there is a noticeable difference between 26er, 27.5 and 29ers. This difference can easily result in a 1st place becoming a 3rd place or even worse if the right weapon is not selected for the specific race (terrain dependent).

If sponsors sponsored 29ers only because it ties in with their marketing plan (to increase sales), then we would have seen more 29ers at DH races. 29ers are not as good as 26ers when it comes to DH and therefore sponsors will not insist that their rides ride with it…

Sure, give Burry any size wheels and he’ll kick my @ss all the way to next week Thursday. But, he might just drop a position or 2 in a race if he is forced to ride a wheel size that everyone know is second best for the terrain of said race.

Guys, guys, guys let's settle this for once and all.

There are so many 29'er threads on here that one can't even keep track anymore.

We need a winner.

I nominate this dude, I reckon he wins.

Not so long ago mountain bicycles as regards weight, materials ,geometries and technologies had reached a point where manufacturers(arguably) were unable to bring anything really ground breaking.

The marketing gurus know the psychology of the buyer.

The result seems that the marketing people realise that 2 new wheel sizes will be the new ticket to selling more bicycles.

A demand gets created. The consumer gets "told" what he "needs".

Bicycle manufacturers need sales to make profit. The obvious easy way is make the old wheel size redundant and start a whole new market on bigger wheels. Its good for business.

Manufacturers put sponsored riders on the new wheel sizes and they win....WOW...thing is they would have won on any size wheel. So buyer thinks that new wheel size must be "better".

Fact is its marketing wether we admit it or not....and if you really "believe " that you are faster/better/smoother/enjoy your ride more then that's great....its called sports psychology....if you believe its better then it will be ...if you believe it will make a difference between 1st and 2nd place then it will.....its bullsh#t and everybody loves it.

My deduction out of the XC Olympics was that its the rider that counts.

Kulhavy rode a heavier bike than the other riders....remember he opted for a dual suspension....yet he won....why...the wheel size?...the brand of bike?....the softer ride of the dual suspension?.....the colour of his wheels?......

No he won because he was the strongest rider.....

That's what I love about the "Its all marketing" brigade - they don't let facts and experience get in the way of their conspiracy theories.
