Cyclocross for commuting and then some

So I am starting to commute to work (about 11 - 15km depending on route).

Reckon my awesome giant Trance X3 without any lockout will be a bit much so keen to look at alternatives.

 

What would an entry level cyclocross bike set one back and where would I buy one in Cape Town?

 

Any other suggestions, maybe a cheaper fixie with flat bars

Just build up a SS mtb , its what i did and is a fine commuting tool concidering the road conditions. finding a Cyclocross bike is a mission .

Find a cheap second hand MTB, throw some semi-slicks on it and make it a singlespeed like Iron said.

 

Cheap as chips, low maintenance and a lot of fun.

 

Careful though, as your X3 might get jealous....

Well the reason I thought maybe the cx route is that I will need a bike for the argus next year and meh, they look awesome!

Maybe a single speed city commuter is also an option??

 

I assume if one does find a cx bike here they are k#k expensive?

What size do you need and at what budget?

 

I might know of a Singular Kite going up for sale. Really well built bike with great spec.

There is a kraut in Kenilworth selling cyclo cross bikes.From what I have seen they are quite reasonable.There have been a few for slae on the hub

I built mine thus:

 

Cotic X - Matthew @ Cotic SA (frame and fork) - around R3300 incl postage

Bars - Ritchey 44cm drop _ had them lying around

Shifters - microshift bar-end (bought on the hub R350)

wheels- Alex xlite on XT hubs (36h) - disc (hub - R2k)

brakes - Avid BB7s with shimano drop bar levers (CRC +- R1000 for both with rotors)

seatpost - own free

stem - kcnc own free

chainset-own mtb free (changed BB)

BB- R252 - cyclesphere

Saddle- Rolls - own free

rubber - CRC R600 for both

Sundries such as cables/ outers/tubes etc from various LBS around me.

 

Net result is this:

 

 

I have since changed to a 40t mrp front ring with Paul chainkeeper, running 1x9 (12-36) - so don't need a full 3 ring set and front derailleur.

 

My best bike ever.

Worth every cent.

CX bikes are awesome for commuting, light trails/singletrack/long rides.

 

If you use cantis instead of disc andf a cheaper road wheelset for commuting, your price of purchase comes down even more.

 

I LOVE this bike. I ride it more than any other.
