Let FA know ... from what I've heard, they give their products great support.

Ironically, it's on the (more expensive) Craft one. My Cape Storm light jacket is years old, but the engagement of the zip still 100% - due to it being metal parts.

Anatomic make one. But I don't think its "breathable" so I reckon you'd sweat a bucketload in it.

I have the Anatomic one, got it for R200. It works. But you do sweat in it. I wasn't too keen on the Magneto jacket as it looked a pain with the magnets and SW had them for almost R700! Crazy! At least at R200 if it rips on the trail its cheap enough to replace.

But unless I get caught in the rain I dont bother riding in it if I can help it.

Mojoman the Magneeto is great. SW is ridiculously expensive - i saved 200 bucks at my LBS. I did fall badly and i ripped the sleeves. Sent them to FA for a repair and it looks like they were completely replaced at NO charge!!

I have also slid down some ST on my front with no damage to the jacket so they are tough and FA's service is great. It is very water repellent but not totally waterproof. I will always have one i just want to find the waterproof options too.

If anyone did that Parys 24 hour thing last year, you'll know that those bright shiny yellow (fold into their own pocket)

apple dry mac jacket things.....don't work for s#1t at 3am in torrential thunder storms....

I felt & looked like Spongebob!!!!!

Most of the local jackets are water repellent rather than waterproof ... ok for light rain, but you'll get pretty soaked in anything heavy.

The First Ascent Alumina is apparently waterproof @ R999.

I think the Fox is slightly cheaper, while imports are likely to cost double that.

I have been looking at this jacket.

Now what about that stuff Cape Union Mart sell that you wash your clothes / jacket in to make it more water repellent ... anyone tried this yet?

With rain comes dark weather, so I prefer a jacket that is also high-viz, esp if commuting. This is the jacket I use below. It's "100% water resistant" which is obviously not like a dry suit, but definitely does its job and it keeps out the wind. And the hoodie is very useful - slips under the helmet and keeps water running down your back.

It helps: makes water 'bead' so it runs off faster and is a repellant.

I've tried Capestorm and First Ascent shells, as well as Paramo and GoreTex. The local ones are light-weight and the First Ascent Magneeto is great but not for persistent or seriously heavy rain. The Paramo breathes well in cold weather and is seriously comfortable and waterproof but the GoreTex was the best at keeping you dry, breathing and withstanding abuse... just a pity it got 'redistributed' in a burglary.

If you're looking at GoreTex for cycling, go for 2-ply, it's more flexible but does exactly the same job.

I'd look at this, if I had the money...

Don't Fox make one? It's called a fluid racing jacket

yes but its a piece of plastic. (if its that see-through one you are talking about) you will sweat a lot in that thing.

GORE-TEX® doesn't come cheap but its a great material - waterproof / resistant and breathes. And tough.

Got my kit from Evans Cycles.

best stuff in the world. all my snow kit is Goretex and it's awesome. Recently got some salomon trail shoes for walking the dogs in the mountains and the quagmire of Rondebosh and i've not had wetsock at all.

Costs a bit but lasts well and is worth every penny. Been looking around for a jacket for a bit now to get the right one.
