Regularly removing a chain using a SRAM Powerlock

Hi fellow hubbers, I am looking for some assistance.

 

Some time back after buying a 29er, I bought a SRAM Powerlock (as opposed to a powerlink) with the intention of being able to easily remove my bicycles chain to clean and soak.

 

However after some investigation it seems that the Powerlock for a 9 and 10 speed chain is intended for single use only, much like the Shimano pins.

 

Question is, does anyone use a Powerlock on a 9 or 10 speed chain and regularly remove the chain using it?

If so, how are you unclipping the Powerlock since it seems like special pliers are required and it is a bit of a bugger to unclip?

 

Any suggestions around alternatives to using the Powerlock are also welcome.

been using them for a while now, I just use a pair of pliers to open them.

 

just make sure you carry a spare when you ride just in case it does give up the ghost eventually.

yeah they open with needle nose pliers, there vids on youtbue that show you how if your unsure.

On the 9-speed you have to push the plates in towards each other before you try separate them, that's the trick.

 

10-speed link I got for my road job said it cant be re-opened, although that was two years ago

 

Powerlock vs Powelink lets go to the SRAM site and check spec sheets.

On the packaging for the Powerlock it reckons it is for single use only.

 

My LBS reckons for 9 and 10 speed you get the Powerlock because the chains are too thin to make a link which can be regularly removed without compromising it, and 8 speed and below use the Powerlink.

 

Will check out Youtube to see how it gets done.

Just checked the SRAM web site, and they do make a Powerlink for 9 speed, but not for 10.

 

10 speed Powerlock reckons it is used for easy maintenance, can't figure out why the packing would say for single use only, and why so tricky to remove.

On a 9 speed chain... I use this for the PowerLink: Missing Link Remover

 

Sometimes it gets opened and closed 10 times before I replace the chain... and then I use a new one with a new chain... But I wonder if I could still reuse it??? I am sure I can

I use the KMC missing link.

You get single use and re-usable ones,

I always use the re-usable ones.

The pliers for the link also makes it super easy to remove.

I carry one as a spare in the saddle bag for just in case something goes wrong or for a quick fix on a broken chain.

I have also battled with these in the past, personal opinion is that if it is a quick link then one shouldn't have to use pliers to separate the chain.

You need master link pliers to remove the 10 speed sram power lock link - otherwise near Impossible to remove. Can be re-used on the same chain but not transferred to a new chain. Apparently due to a patent infringement sram can't market a re-useable 10 speed master link , so they have to tell you one use only but countless people reuse them with absolutely no hassles , me included. The sram power lock master link works perfectly on the Shimano 10 speed chains as well - I'm using one on a Shimano directional 10 speed chain - works perfectly
