Roof mount is the best because when you get to the destination and start riding your bike people see the bugs splattered over the bars and the fork... you can tell them its because you are so fast in the singletrack :clap:

 

I have roof mount, love it

I had tried both and it is difficult to decide which works for you:-

 

Rear - bad - get dirty, difficult to get to boot.

Rear - good - saves petrol on long trips, can carry 3/4 bikes

 

Top - bad - heavy on petrol, car get dirty, if not clean bike after ride, sometimes heavy to lift up bike, sometimes you bump branches, if you forget, can't just park in garage or carport, have to offload before park.

Top - good - easy to get to boot, out of the way

 

Up to u. I prefer rear one...

Easily avoided by wrapping the bike in black bags. Done this many times and the bikes arrived clean. Good idea to avoid the sandblasting. I did this once and all of my bearings were ruined.

 

Yes, I've heard of a similar one using cling wrap. I also had to replace bearings recently after our holiday to Eerste Rivier where we travelled about 30km max but in some of the thickest mud. Real stuff up - pun intended.

my biggest worry about going roof mount would be scratching the car getting the bike on and off. Not all of us can afford to ride 5kg machines.

Hmmm, I've just bought a roof rack set (still need to buy the bike rack itself) with the intention of putting a 16kg downhill bike on it... That, and my car is a brand new 2012 machine which I love almost as much as my bike and am *much* more pedantic about. I'll let you know how it turns out!

We've been wrestling with the same issue since we got the new car, it 's got roof rails, ready for roof rack, but afraid we'd forget to take the bikes off first before parking. And no more tandem racing. With no towbar, it means R5500 first for a factory fitted one, ( not to void warrantee), before we can even start to look at brackets.

You are lucky, I just bought a new new car (demo model) that doesn't have a towbar. I was quoted R24k just for the tow bar and I am not willing to get the warranty void.....so roof racks it is

Not sure how you would scratch your roof unless you are trying to ride your bike onto your roof. (some skill required for this)

 

Im pretty anal about my car and it doesnt have any scratches from loading bikes onto the roof racks, you put it on the carrier, not the roof itself.

 

The only way you would sctatch your roof is if you have $hit on the pads or roof when you mount the racks, make sure those are clean and then mount.

Just damaged another tow bar mounted rack on my way back from the Berg. If you spend your life on tar the differences are less of an issue. Travelling on dirt roads with a rear mounted carrier stuffs up the bikes and carrier.

Is this the hanging kind of rack or the one where you stand the bikes up?

Im very anti the hanging kind as they do stuff your bikes up one way or another.

Nope it's an Audi but cos its not factory fitted, the have to order a new rear bumper and add new park distance control sensors blah blah blah, so roof racks it is
