No duties, but you will pay VAT equal to the cost of the item plus 10%.

Effectively, this means that you will pay 15% VAT

Recently bought stuff from the US. Only paid Vat on the value. Not on the value +10%.

Seems there isnt a lot of standard

The standard is to add 10% to the value to cover freight. If the invoice clearly says freight included then there is no reason to add the 10%.

The 10% has nothing to do with freight and is not something charged to you. It is known as an upliftment charge and is only added to the value to calculate the VAT. Eg...you import something for R100. SARS will charge you VAT on R110 (R100 plus 10%) and not R100. You won't pay the R10.

SARS doesn't check every parcel coming in, you were one of the lucky ones that got away with it.

Here is my real life example buying something with zero customs last year. It was delivered to the Post Office.

Custom value = R2,197.00

+ 10% fee = R219.70

Sub-total = R2,416.70

+ 14% VAT = R338.32

Sub-total = R2,755.02

+ Clearance fee = R30.00

Total = R2,785.02

Did you actually have to pay this amount? On a duty free item you shouldn't have to.

I brought in a wheel and some other parts last year and it worked out to:

CRC Invoice value: GBP 686.30

Customs value: R 8239 (at a SARS rate of 12.0049 R/GBP)

I had to pay SARS:

VAT: R 1268.67 (14% of R 9063: R9063 = R 8239 + 10%)

Clearance fee: R 30

Total: R 1298.67

I have bought a lot of stuff from overseas and the VAT on duty-free items has always been 15.4% of the customs value. The customs value has always been the invoice value times the SARS ROE.

It's a little bit unclear where SARS gets its ROE from. I brought in items in September and December last year and both times they charged R12.0049/GBP. In September, the market rate was around R11.7/GBP and in December it was around R13/GBP.

Is it the same on frames?

Does it make a difference whether new or 2nd hand?

What about complete bikes?

I assume it is the same if buying from Ebay?

Appreciate any guidance - thanks

Same on frames, parts have no duty only VAT plus fees as highlighted above

If you buy a complete bike you pay duty, better to ask them to split the bike, send frame separate to the wheels etc, then you can avoid duty.
