agreed sportstracks have more than enough info and is very easy to use . much better than the garmin software. mapsource is great on your pc .

Dankie  vriende, julle het my baie gehelp.

Thanks ML.  Think I'll get myself an offroad type GPS if I want the auto routing thing.  As for the newer GPS', heard a rumour about the pricing and got the fright of my life.  So Polar it'll stay, for now.

DirtBreath, the only prob with the Suunto is the cost Wink

i have the garmin edge and i love it. i just pop it into my backpack when i hike and then you can use it to "track back" if you are inclined to go bundu-bashing to check out potential new trails or "sommer net" for the love of it!

I use both when racing - great to have 8 info readouts in your cockpit to see whats up with your body and with the bike.

The Garmin 305 Edge has nice programmable alarms to remind you when to chug your next Whasp gel, and if your cadence/heartbeat is too low/high.

Software with the polar is great.

I train mostly with my polar S725X. Service from Polar is exceptional - any issue gets sorted before you can breath a sigh of relief.

you can even navigate with the garmin, so download routes before going on holiday, and you can have fun exploring.

I think pbp2009 is the authority on all the garmin can do.  It is possible with 3rd party software (freeware) to plug your forerunner/ edge  into your laptop and get continual plotting on the laptop screen.  (ONly limitation is the laptop battery.  THis will work in the car but unfortunately not on the bike.

What parameters do u use to determine when to chow a gel? thats an interesting concept and wouldnt mind using it...

Slowpoke, picked up my Suunto in New York for a fraction of what they cost here. What clinched it for me was the looks. Doesnt look like a HRM so you dont like the "all the gear no idea" guy when you are panting and gasping.

Not sure about Suunto backup as I have not had any problems yet and battery easy to change (often). Not sure about their GPS pod, havent tried yet.

Will let you know when I get that little round tuit.

Dirtbreath, one of my adventure racing buddies has a suunto with all the extras - all worth every penny. errrr, yeah, you might die of extreme old age before you even need to find out what their backup is like from what i've heard... so please do not hold your breath cos it's not likely to be needed!

Sport science institute by nuweland gebruik Suunto.

Ekstra voordeel van Suunto is dat jy elke slag kan chuckle as jy se 'Kom ons ry Sooento!'

Well, fandacious, I set the distance alarm to go off 5km from the end of the race, so it buzzes and lets me know when to start hooking it.

I also set my time alarm for 45mins, thus getting prompted when to suck on the Whasp Kiwi gel. normally when you are racing on the mtb, if the going gets rough you can 'forget' or delay to take your gel at every 45min mark, and then 'bonk' as a result.

Also setting the cadence to start buzzing at anything lower than 75 keeps your pedals turning over - although this can be annoying on the mtb as there are often stop start situations.

I dont use the garmin alarms for heart rate - I prefer the polar for heart rate, and my automatic lap timer is set to every 5km, giving me the split as I go.

Suunto is heavily, heavily overpriced here, if you intend buying one, go international, in the USA they are at least 30% cheaper, in Singapore expect 40% cheaper - thats a substantial profit margin locally.

If you are going to be buying locally, you could probably get both a Polar a Garmin and enough change to enjoy a steak and beer dinner for the price of a Suunto.

..............I dont think you can go wrong with Garmin anyway, I have three of em, I recently took one to Garmin for an update as the mapping was about 5 years old, came back the next day and the guy says (with a big smile) " Sorry Sir we broke your Garmin"

.........Umm and now?

........."Hee, Hee, its a bit old, but take this voucher to any Cape Union Mart and they will give you a new upgraded one".

No questions, no stories - There is still service out there.!
