The solution to (drunk) motorists killing other road users? Opinions/Suggestions:

I personally don't have a problem with drinking, thats your right,

but the drinking and driving, and they ability to get away with it it's where the problem sits.

LAW needs to be enforced properly, but then what chance is there of that if intentional, cold murderers can get a 5 year sentence.

The law means nothing without proper application, leading to a proper/scary deterrent, IE, this guy is guilty of manslaughter, which translates into death unintentually. if this happened in the states would easily end in a 20+ yr jail sentence,

Other example being the female lawyer in Jhb last year. the Taxi incident where he dragged her.

What about the 4x4 driver last week, that passed the cyclist on the left, on the dirt road, I don't care what the circumstances, if the rider was 4 abreast, that is just not on. fine, fine the cyclist for riding 4 abreast, but also find the 4x4 landie owner for dangerous driving.

Problem is it doesn't. I'm seeing more and more stuff like this. Guys driving around drinking and nobody to challenge them to stop. Guys coming home drunk at 6/7/8am, carrying on drinking all morning and going off again later in their cars.

Just think how much broken glass (bottles) you have to avoid on your bike.

How do you stop them? They're gone by the time you pick up your phone to call the cops (who'll do what??) and no traffic cops ANYWHERE between 5pm Friday and 8am Monday.

This is seriously bothering me because I KNOW guys who are doing this and what if they kill/maim someone? I feel I should do more to make it an issue at least with the traffic cops. And when they say they don't have budget (or whatever) to work the hours when we really need them, at least get the local media involved/whatever.

Why do we always have to be reactive? It's too late then. I was part of a lot of noise after one of our community died like this but nothing changes because we don't keep focused on what needs to be done: get some POLICING going, at least! Why aren't there road blocks early in the early morning?? Things won't change unless we figure out what's wrong, what needs to change and how we can all get involved.

It's really sad that it seems those who know this guy (who in my view is a murderer) say they're not surprised. It means there were points along the way where he should have been stopped - but instead...

Have you considered taking the matter of 'drink driving' up with your local member of parliament.

seriously!!!

this is SA

A lot of forum users have expressed their 'anger and dismay' on this discussion thread, and rightfully so. So why can't your local MP lobby against drink driving? Is their a National Cycling Association / Federation which cycling clubs are affiliated to? Maybe they can take the matter up with Government?

Local councillor is one of a few non-ANC. Local council is not much interested in anything other than 3-bags-full ANC party line. BUT I am still going to chase it up this way. I've been threatened by these guys and the chap across the road (apparently) had a gun pulled on him. It has been a little bit quieter since then tho! So it does seem worth confronting them. But it's a trend across town, specially at month-end.

A good suggestion.

Thing is, drinking in public, even while you're driving and binge-drinking, fights etc. seems to be 'cool'. Becoming a norm that few challenge. So I see where the 'blow up the bottle store' idea comes from...

Can be, but if you talk to CB and ask them to focus on the lack of prosecution of the people killing peolpe.

They will always try and make it a bit both sided, and I'm not against this, we as cyclist are guilty, we do ride 2+ abreast, and ye sure, fine us, make us abide by the law also. but riding 2 abreast does not justify being ridden of the road.

It will be overrun with stories of cyclists skipping stop signs.

And us being our own worst enemy rears its head again.

Listen, not to detract from the point of this thread, I'm starting a new one and moving these posts to that.

Make those found guilty of Drinking and driving work in the State Mortuaries and dig graves!!!!

Take their license away on a first offence, many who kill have been caught before.

Also get the testing equipment calibrated, the officers trained and the storage of blood samples sorted out. These are small technicalities the get people off the hook.

As I've already mentioned on the 'condolences' thread; maybe the National Cycling Federation / Association could lobby Government on behalf of the cycling community.

It would also benefit society at large, i.e; Other road users, pedestrians, people who participate in road running etc.

Why just drunk drivers killing cyclists? What about drunk dirvers killing motorists and other road users?

Fair enough. I just thought, this was born out of the cyclist being killed in PE thread, and it's a cycling forum.

Hands up if you want mt to change the topic title.
