What would be a better bike for someone who is looking for more speed on climbs and looking to go faster generally. The price of a top spec 26er full carbon with all the latest bling etc is the same as an average middle of the line 29er. Was thinking of upgrading my 26er ds to a 29er, but perhaps its prudent to get a top of the line carbon 26er for the same price.

But seriously, when I switched from my 10kg 26er to my 12kg 29er I went faster everywhere, up, down and over the rough stuff.

That is no joke. It works, and it works as you have to ride that bloody thing up the climbs and the least painful way to do this is to ride the flipping thing as hard as you can, get into a rhythm and keep it there.

 

When you get back on your geared bike you fly up the climbs and will be able to select a gear you can keep going at a good pace up the climbs with.

Well that is a 3kg and I am sure a good few thousand SA rondt upgrade with far better components wheels and suspension with more than likely better geometry.

 

So yesterday a fast looking guy on a light weight 29'er race type geometry duallie passes us while we are doing a group photo and chit chatting. We eventually get moving ... one thing leads to another and hey I just caught Mr 29'er while I am riding my 26'er, heavy as a horse trail bike.

 

The week before that a fast boy comes past on his 29'er HT and I could not help chase him, keep with him for and chat and then drop him. I was on my heavy 29'er SS HT.

 

What am I saying. The SS has been my ride of choice as of late and in no uncertain terms it has made me a stronger and fitter rider. No matter what wheel format.

 

Yes this is an unashamedly bold statement that I am finally starting to feel fit again and the SS is to thank for this.

Not saying the 29er was the upgrade, have to agree with you that fitness and skill is the more important factors for going faster, but with my new bike, lesser weight and like you said better components and geometry I climb hills I never could have on my old bike.Also have more confidence to go faster downhill as it feels saver.

Its not about the arrow. Its about the Indian. Bottom line don't expect to get more speed out of a 29'er. The speed comes from your legs
