Where do you get your forks serviced and set up?

I have a 2010 Gaint ReignX1(bought in 2012) and I would like change a few things to the fork.

I would like to try a thinker oil and or stiffer springs. The adjustment is not really noticeable now. (i am a bit heavier then the average cyclist...)

The fork fitted - Fox 36 Vanilla R, 160mm suspension fork

Where do you take your forks to be serviced and set up?

Buy the seals your self and do it in your garage, really not that hard. As to setting up, specified by weight, then its basically just the feel.

Stiffer springs and thicker oil does two different things. The once cannot compensate for a setting on the other one's turf.

Stiffer springs are installed when your weight doesn't produce the desired sag in the fork.

Thicker oil is added when you want to reduce the speed at which the fork compresses and rebounds.

These are two completely different issues. Rather tell us what outcome you want and we'll suggest the appropriate route in getting there.

Ok,

The preload is on its max. the sag is more then the prescribed.

The rebound is too fast(Pogo stick) even with the adjuster set to the slowest setting.

I need this bike to do two things. CX(MTN Barberton/Sabie) and more aggressive trial riding(Mankele Avalanche)

I think I am a bit heavy for the current internals.

A Johann Bornman dude is apparetly the best . I am yet to use his services but its only because I haven't had time to take a few forks to him .

Last fork he did for me took 2 rides to end up worse than before.

This is what I do now. Easy to learn and feel much better knowing that I've taken the proper care to get it right.

Interesting to see this comment... Did you take it back to Johann for inspection? I don't know Johann, but it seems that he posted earlier, a fairly good post with specific questions....

Just wondering, as people knock others quite fast nowadays. PS. Setting up a fork, is not an exact science. The one day mine is fine, the other I do not like it...

Luckily mine is not a pogo stick... whistling.gif

It was the second time it happened. First time the agent sent to him as default. Lasted NO rides. Chucked the part and move to a different brand.

Second time was the same situ. Ended up deciding that the cost to courier each time was yards more than shipping seals/bushings in myself and learning to do the services/repairs myself.

Not to seem like a hater, but I found I was in a situation were all the answers were being told to me, without solutions.

Well, my fork sucked so badly after I got it back I just closed that chapter in my book.

Bottom line: none of this is rocket science.

OK, it seems as if you do need two different things altered: fitting a stiffer spring and making some sort of change to your rebound settings and/or porting. If you just add thicker oil, then your compression speed will also go down.

Getting the right spring is always a problem since most of these are just sold as soft, medium and hard.

You need to decide how much less sag in mm you want. Then remove the spring, measure the wire's section, the OD, the length and count the number of coils. Ask a specialist spring maker, such as Starco Spring Works in Booysens to make a new one for you.

As for the porting, decide whether you can live with slower compression speeds too. This fork isn't sophisticated enough to give you all the options you want.
