Simple solution to the police,

#1 get Helen Zille in an unmarked car, at an unknown time, with no escourt to accompany someone that cycles to travel one of these routes, def include a little bit of following a GA bus.

In the end she is responsible for Cpt,

#2, get someone, from police, that fit onto a bike, to ride with someone down one of these routes... they mos say it's safe, let them experience their concept of safe them self.

#4 another idea, go out and record the actions, or is that non actions of metro/police out on the routes. showing them sitting and watching bad behaviour proceed right in front of them, and then show this publicly.

#5 where's all the guys with GoPro2's, go and sit for a hour or 2 on one of these routes/hot spots and record it for us, and post it online, And make sure to forward link to recordings to Helen Zille, Police, GA, etc.

in the end, they need to be shown to not be doing anything, or is that anything of value, public ally,

follow me.

Hi Bronwyn,

GA bus A4371 at 08h35.

Place: Circle between Sawkins RD and Campground RD, next to the Ronderbosch Common. He is heading towards Raapenburg road.

Driver mounts the pavement and drives in the bicycle lane while navigating the circle. Everyday occurrence.

He should rather take Park road and turn into Milner road whereby he won’t be putting other people’s lives at risk; I don’t want to see another person killed because of driver being careless.

I would appreciate your response and an indication of how this will be solved including a time frame.

Kind regards,

Stephen

Question

Does Bronwyn know about Dirt Riders comment, "the company that I work for", which implies he is then commenting on behalf of GA, since if he did not want to do that, he would have needed to state views and comments made in forum by himself is his private views and comments and does not reflect or represent GA in any way.

might be interesting to see if her IP range, his IP range and Annie O IP ranges are the same.

I agree with your comments, but I have cycled along that section between St James and Muizenberg in the Muizies direction in traffic and it is not for the faint hearted.

There are two bends to the left in particular that are hair raising.I would not ride there again but would take the Boyes Drive option.

Basically what I also have intended with my post! This does however, in no way exonerate the GA Bus company to drive irresponsably!

I, for one WILL NOT CYCLE ON THAT STRETCH of road....whether I have an equal right to do so or not. (you gamble with your life!!)

AT LEAST NOT UNTIL ALL THE ROADWORKS ARE DONE...it is simply just not safe.

{Refer to Dictator's post #119}

As for the rest of Cape Town's cyclist vs GA buses issues...I'm in full agreement...with firsthand experience of near misses as well!

PS: apologies for spelling in original post - on mobile & out of country...

The irony of illegally taken photographs being used to demonstrate "illegal" behaviour by bus drivers is ironic. And amusing.

What gives you the right to break the law to demonstrate others allegedly doing the same?

I have read this and other threads and pieces on cycling accidents - especially in Cape Town. The fact is that there is certainly a problem, but until there is mutual respect between cyclists and other road users, nothing good will happen. Accidents will continue to occur and Newton tells us that cyclists will (almost invariably) come off the worst.

The majority of reaction to yesterday's tragic accident on this thread has been kneejerk and (perhaps understandably) emotional. Not all GABS drivers are murderers. You know very little of the GABS training programme, yet you make rash assumptions, judgements and statements. Do you think the driver in question did it deliberately? How do you think he feels, having been involved in an accident which took a young man's life? You are looking at this solely from one side. That's unhelpful.

Things need to settle down a little if any coherent and progressive response is to come from this incident.

Just saying.

Who can host a Website?

We need to create a blog where cyclists can upload any transgression committed by motorised traffic that can harm the rider or his/her fellow riders. MAybe thehub.co.za can fulfill this function?

Then we need a fund that can take these cases to court. Cyclist will need to report these matters to the police.

PPA has money. We demand it be spent on legal fees to take these people to court instead of gathering dust. When I was a member I gave them no mandate to save my membership fees. Having an investment account is a good thing but being thrifty with that money can't be legal because dividend are income and a non profit is supposed to spend its income or its not fulfilling its mandate.

Now THIS proposition can get us somewhere!!

I like that an ORGANIZED effort can be done...not some disjointed & individual approach...with that the GA company can just laugh it off!! BUT with a consolidated approach...much more success!!! I will actaully "renew" my PPA membership, if this is soemthing that they can get off the ground.

also theHub website as a vehicle to log traffic driving offences....I like that...

Its a good idea but having his email flooded with public complaints may be les than productive. Its my opinion that the PPA should be addressing these concerns directly with the provincial and national government. They're the body we should be channeling these efforts through.

Most of you are paying a membership fee to them to be beneficiaries of their work. I appreciate what they've done thus far but on the issue of road safety I am of the opinion they have not done enough. It the members responsibility to steer the EXCO in the direction they want the organisation to go. It 10 months to the next AGM, If I were still a member I'd be speaking to the EXCO about an emergency meeting and set a direction, get a plan together with milestones and hold the organisation accountable to those milestones at the next AGM.

The best we as a community can do is hold protest rides, raise awareness via forums, radio chat shows etc and perhaps a petition.

You're all making excellent points but there needs to systematic and coordinated action to get these changes through. Folks, PPA can be a lot more than it is. YOU HAVE GOT TO DRIVE THEM.

@GoLefty,

A PPA emergency meeting before year's end would be timeous as many more cyclists hit the roads preparing for the Argus...

I rode this am down the main road on the same stretch... I gotta admit I don't feel safe anymore and literally k@kked myself every time I heard a bus :(

Phew!

Yeah, Zilla. I can imagine the angst.

Yip I feel your pain too.

Last year my wife and I were riding through Lakeside and a GA bus missed her by a few millimeters. She rode into the pavement to avoid the bus hitting her as it passed us. The bus was angling toward the pavement, clearly the driver was not able to hold his line (;))..

I am terrified everytime she gets out on the bike alone and much prefer to ride behind her no matter how slow we're going.

Its like being held to randsom on your own roads. its not right, its not constitutional to be in this position, feeling this way.
