Heart Rate Max

Hi,

Over the past i have on a hard ride maintained a Heart Rate of 165 - 180 over a 2 hour period.

With rides like this my average would be just below 170 and max at like 190.

A few weeks ago i was getting over flu and took an EASY ride,

my HR was elevated the whole time(i do understand thi is because i was sick), but spiked all the way to 213.

I am 28 and in good physical shape.

The question i actually wanted an answer to was,

how high is a very high HR and could i then use this as my max HR for training.

What HR monitor are you using. Sometimes they play up. My Garmin once told me my HR was 236, and unless I had Vtach, I highly doubt that. A good rule of thumb is to use 220-age as a marker of your max HR, but the best would be to take a max HR test and see what that produces.

213 is a suspicous reading so best not to use it for your HR zone calculations.

Rather do a proper threshold test or a proper max heart rate test (if you must.....)

OR use your average HR (170) figure you recorded during your heard ride as your LT threshold HR and calculate your zones on LTHR rather than Max HR

I keep meaning to determine my max HR but frankly, I am scared! I did it once many years ago and it was horrible! I know - I am being a wuss but there it is! blush.png

use 210 - (age/2) - (0.02667 x (weight in pounds)) + 1.

most accurate formula for men.

That seems low... I get to 153 and regularly get over 180 while training...

Your calculation sequence is wrong. Calculate this number first - ((age/2) - (0.2667 x (weight in pounds))), then do the rest. I've added brackets.

That also seems wrong.

Eg me

210 - (18.5-47.037)

210 -(-28.5378)

sorry guys, there needed to be a zero before the 0.02667.

your max HR is 187.8. so say 188.

should be close to your actual now.

Thanks Anton / JCZA - that works out neatly for me & hadnt heard of this one before. A few years back i worked out I was 180 on the gut-busting method of measuring. This has me at 176.3, so no need to go fast uphill and throw up to check it.

2.2lbs to the kg.

(p.s. JCZA - that would make you the messiah, but exclusively for South Africans?)

age based heart rate calculations mean nothing if you've maintained an active lifestyle. Push to the point of blowing (long hills are best), and then use the max from that + 5 ....
