They did that to my Tazz a few years ago. It rusted where the new roof was fitted. They repaired it once. After that the insurance refused to doe it again. I eventally traded the car like that and really lost money. I am not with That company anymore.

The principle behind insurance is simple: to enable the party covered to return to the same position as they were before their loss occurred. Not in a worse position, or a better position. In the same position.

If your vehicle is 4 years old and has 80,000km on it when damaged or written off, you should in principle receive replacement parts with same mileage and in the same condition, or a replacement vehicle of the same mileage and in the same condition.

Why do insurance providers replace insured goods with brand new equivalents in some cases? Because it's mostly practically very difficult to find a replacement in exactly the same condition and of the same age. With mechanical parts however, wear and condition are less of an issue, as long as it can be proven that the parts meet the same reliability and quality standards. Refurbished parts are thus good candidates.

It @#$ing hacks me off that the masses see insurance as a way "to get new stuff", and are actually quite happy if something is stolen or damaged, because "hey, it's not so bad, I'm getting a new one!" I mean, you're paying tons of money all the time, aren't you? Why shouldn't you expect new stuff, seeing as they're ripping you off with high premiums?

The irony is that people are ripping themselves off by expecting new stuff, by claiming when not fully justified or fair, and by not understanding the principles in action. It's a vicious circle. Claim more, demand new stuff, pay more, moan more about paying more, expect even more, and so it goes on.

insurance are sharks regardless

how on earth can they suddenly drop my premium by R200 when i phone them, but not offer it before.

It's part of the vicious circle. They get @#$%ed by people ripping them off, so they return the ripping off. Then people get pissed off because they're paying so much, they claim as much as they can, the stats start looking bad for the insurers, they hike the prices again, and so it continues.

The trick is to find a broker who only maintains a specific portfolio of low-risk clients, and in turn negotiates low-risk cover with their underwriters. This world does exist. For example, my R325k car costs me a whopping R570/month. Try getting even close to that (or even close to double that) with one of these direct providers. You'll need to prove yourself to them though, they generally only work on a referral basis, our family has been with them for years. We get the best service imaginable, they didn't even bill us any excess for the one or two instances where we've legitimately needed to claim.

Then again,i would rather have my car fixed with second hand body parts (genuine) than ill fitting, pirate parts.

That's half the problem ... it includes both second hand and pirate parts so you don't know.

Yeah I hear you!!!!

With regards to returning the vehicle in same condition: I also understand this and think it to be fair, my issue comes with how second hand is something? to quote animal farm : "All animals [parts] are equal [second hand] some are just more equal [second hand] than others :)

My biggest issue is that when you do have a legit claim that you have to absolutely beg and mostly first become a "d##$" before anything is done. You never get phoned back EVER!!

My current claim took a month and couple of days just to be finalised!!! I kept track: I phoned 18 times, they phoned ONCE!!

Anyways I'm pissed at them and I am sure there are more reputable companies out there ... like the ones who gave me an overall better deal for 1000 bucks less a month!!!

while your point is somewhat valid, im sure the insurance companies are hardly on the verge of bankruptcy. Their sums take all of this into account when calculating premiums, and as we all know, the house always wins

The main issue is not the fact that your car is fixed with pirate part. The repairers quote on the price of brand new original parts. I had a panel beater strip my car after repair and fix it with the parts he quoted the insurance.

It started like this:

I see that the headlight is a no-name Japanese brand?

Him: Yes, but it is just as good.

Me: Your quote specifies a Hella?

Him: I know, but this is just as good.

Me: Where is the invoice for the Japanese no-name?

He produces the invoice, showing the jap to be R280, where the Hella he quoted on was R1380 including his mark-up (yes, they put a mark-up on top of the parts they are not going to supply). No wonder insurance companies are being bled dry....and why they will only use certain repair shops.

I then demanded he replace all the parts, and show me the invoices. He bitched and threatened until the insurer phoned him with the same demand. His response to me a while later was that I robbed him of making money.

My question is this...

He is charging labor for everything including fitting and stripping parts, and he is putting a mark-up on the parts, so he is making money.
