Fork Oil

Does diesel oil have more additives than standard oil for petrol engines? Am thinking about the seals etc getting damaged?

Not a problem. Dedicated Diesel Engine Oils have more PE additive and a higher ISO viscosity their petrol engine equivalents.

A petrol engine oil will have an SJ or SM or SN classification ahead of CI or CJ or CM e.g SM / CF-4

Dedicated Diesel engine oils have the SAE Diesel engine classification first so CM / SH

15W 40 oil for the oil bath lubrication would be ok. it will provide moe consistent performance than a non VI mproved oil.

Like I siad earlier, 5W from a bicycle shop means nothing unless you know the ISO viscosity of what you had in the fork, and the ISO viscosity of whats going in.

Cool thanks, but the 15w/40 I found is the for Diesel engines would it be ok?

I use castrol magnatec for lowers service , works like a champ - actually noticed no difference to the original factory oil that was in there. Its the damper/uppers oil weight were the difference comes in. But the oil weights ratings are spastically implemented across the various brands , so damn confusing...

Ok so I got it all open and busy with the service.

Then I see that the foam rings are 10mm wide and the ones I got is 5mm?

Do you know if there is a difference? Will the 5mm expand or is there different foam ring sizes?

Did you get the enduro seal kit? I don't like the foam rings you get with it. I used the old rings. Just clean them nicely.

The foam ring will expand, but not double it's size. Maybe like 0.5-1mm.

Doen't really make a difference of the width. As long as it'll suck up oil it's all good.

Their job is to lube the upper bushings in the lowers.

No I got a seal kit when I got my reba, and wanted to use it on the XX......the old seals are torn from being inserted using the wipers so they were stuck behind the wipers.

Sorry for the hijack but how often should a fork be serviced? I have a SID RL 100 with 176 hours riding (granted that majority is district roads that aren't demanding.)

SRAM recommend a complete overhaul every 100 hours, with some minor maintenance in between. I'd suggest taking it to Johan at Yellow Saddle, he'll give you some useful feedback once he's stripped it and seen what's happening inside.
