Last year i had a blast, rode in a COW suit and just went to have fun, you can't race a "duathlon" with 5000 people is my attitude to 94.7 MTB?

What a cock up of a race this year!

1stly, it's a mass event for the JHB public, couple serious MTBers going out there to race, the rest are out there doing their thing which is who i believe they are catering for? So why have a cut-off time or make it reasonable at least? I paid my bucks, why shouldn't i be allowed to do 55km in 5 hours? Or has 94.7 just tried to maximise how much cash they can make with the Kiddies Race (this was just as big a nightmare), 40km, MTB & Road?

I started in A8 with my GF, the last group of SLOW riders since she's not seeded. Let's get this straight, we were going to have FUN and i was pissed off when all of a sudden we end up on a 32km finish distance, i'm seasoned enough to notice sign boards, we never took any short-cuts cos that's not how i roll, both in COW suits. With the cutoff set at 10:30 and us starting at 08:10, we avg'd 17kph when we only had to avg 14 to make cut-off. I think they lifted the 55km boards early?

Just so p'd off with this event! Barring the timing issue of who did the full course, who did the short course, knowingly, unknowingly cos they had been "cut", knowingly or unknowingly, they need to up their act!

I haven't seen the results but I have an idea where the A8s went wrong. There was a section, just by the Gautrain, where you could take a big short-cut if you weren't careful. The group I was with took the short-cut by mistake, but luckily Morne realised we were wrong, so we doubled back and did the full route. I think the short-cut would have cut out about 10km.

I personally think they lifted the boards early so all the A8's ended up on the 30km unknowingly.

There was a 10 hr 15 min cut-off at the 30k mark' and we were then routed onto the short route. It is rediculous that we have the times we have - but there is no way to seperate out the times. They should have DQed us at the cut-off.

From the info i read, the cut-off was 10:30?? Did you see the section they wouldn't allow you to do? They should have all the plans in place to manage the event & timing in my opinion?

It was totally rediculous! The organization of this sucked big time. I started in A8 (8h10) and was forced to take the 30km loop as we apparently missed the cut-off. I had a look at the rules and it stated a cut-off at 10h30. I crossed the finish line a few minutes past 10am! WTF.

Where is the fairness regarding the entry fee that you pay and the batch that you start in???

The best is that I stopped and the guy just refused that we proceed on the 55km route.

How will the organizers know who was redirected vs someone that was really fast?

+1

I was seeded to start A1 but started A8, it's possible i could've ridden a proper time, now i'll get DQ'd cos my start time was from A8 & they have 0 way of telling if i did the proper 55 or 30? You also think they lifted the boards early?

Did anyone ride out the Wesbank Wall??

Yes

Still not sure how this works, I did the 55km and the road ride last year and got nothing special. No extra medal, no green number sad.pngsad.pngsad.png

Not even a pat on the back... sniff sniff

Last year there was a special table hidden even before you got to registration where you could get your Yellow and Green colours on your number. You have to do it after you have your number. Kinda backwards and i think few know/knew about it. Never known about a medal tho?

I came 19th in A1, but 37th overall... no way anyone in the latter groups managed those sort of times!! Looking at the winners times in groups A2 to A4 they were all slower and then suddenly A5 to A8 have super fast times. I personally feel if you have been diverted at the 1/2 way mark, DONT cross the finish line. You know you havnt ridden the distance and regardless of whether its a fun ride or not it just causes problems in the end!!

I believe if you have cut short knowingly, be honest and tell the organisers/don't cross. Most the people i saw at the finish were confused as to where they'd gone wrong. Few actually knew they'd been so called "cut" so they crossed the mats and wondered where they'd gone wrong. I believe it to be an organisational issue.

We have their names!

Race office needs to do a history profile on them to see if their previous results match up to their times.

If not - they need to be tarred and feathered and placed before a firing squad!!!!

Hahahaha.....innocent weekend warriors with 0 clue of how their gears even work, let alone where they went wrong on a MTB course get punished? I blame the organisers for this screw up! You also gonna be fair & fight for me to keep my 2:10 when i'm seeded A1 but started A8?

I saw two guys goiing off the wooden bridge/ track right in the beginning- glad I am not that quick

The one guy (in blue toyota kit) crashed off the inside toward the end of that wooden 'bridge' we rode along. He was shouting "AMBULANCE, i need an ambulance...!!!" and clutching his forearm. I thought "shees aren't you over exaggerating a bit...?". Then he turned and faced my direction and i saw what his pain was about. Both his radius and ulna bones had snapped clean off at the wrist and were sticking completely out of his flesh, in the area where one would take their pulse, with his hand bent completely back, as if it could have just fallen off had it not been for muscle, skin, tendons and ligaments holding it on.

It actually totally rattled me. Most disturbing thing i've seen since I've been riding bikes. I'm not squeemish but i felt sick. I got closer to that green scaffold bridge and started questioning if i should just unclip and walk over it, then straight to my van n go home n take up chess rather.

I hope he heals up quickly and has proper use of his hand ASAP.

How many people lost podium positions because of this?

I agree no harm was done. My issue is more that if you pay for a chip and they go through all the hassle of setting it up, you expect things to go smoother. I would be really pissed if they cut my ride short incorrectly though.

Loved the fact that one of the old guys wearing Castrol gear was wearing "BP" branded gloves.

When I asked him what his "kit sponsors" thought of that, he laughed and said he was planning on getting his gloves dirty enough for it not to be noticed. One of the old guys used to be a pro from what I can gather.

Did anyone ride out the Wesbank Wall??

When i saw it i decided that i would do it even if i landed on my ass. yes i road it and it felt great coming over the top.

I started A5, i rode 54.6Km on endo so please leave me results alone. each rider knows if they did the distance or not. just dont brag that you did 2H30 for your 55km when you did not do the distance that just sucks. if you went wrong blame the organisers not your fellow riders. its a tough one when you are comparing yourself against others when things like this happen.

Holy ****... i was right behind the younger guy (1st crash victim) who crashed and almost came off myself as we skidded on the planks to avoid him. Then 500m later the next chap in front of me hit a rock and took a tumble and dislocated his sholder.... sounds like that area was a war zone of injured people?
