So, I am riding an Anthem X29er which is currently running Avid elixir 5's.

After much consideration I have decided to put the Avid's where they belong, in the bin! They are really the worst brakes ever! The squeal worse than a stuffed pig and give as much feedback through the levers as i would expect if i had two midgets pressing blocks of wood against the rotors to bring me to a stop!

The question is, what do I replace them with?....

strange, my avid 5's does not give me any feedback and they only squeal a little bit when they are wet.

Anyways, lots of guys on the hub really love the new XT brakes so you might want to look at them

I was just about to start a very similar thread. Maybe I'll just piggyback on this one :)

I've basically narrowed it down to:

1. Formula RX with 1piece rotors

2. XT M785's with ice tech rotors

I can get these 2 for about the same price on CRC. At the moment I'm leaning towards the XT's as they have more features for the price, but are they as good as the Formulas WRT feel and power?

The next problem is that for not too much more, I can get a set of Hope M4's, which I know is overkill for me - but the porno factor is very high drool.gif

Thoughts and opinions welcome...

Hi guys

Got a Merida 1-20 500 (2011), had some oem M5xx brakes on it, upgraded to M785 XT (2012) + Icetech rotors last year with the help of TheV, well I'm busy building a very nice bike andI'm putting exactly the same brakes on there, they're awesommeeeeee. You'll never regret it, one finger pull, great feel, and if you clever, you can get a set of 2012 at a steel, otherwise look at the 2013 M666 SLX, it's the same brake,

XTR is a over kill, price is way up there and can't imagine you can improve on the XT feel control value.

MTBR actually did a great brake review a while back, I got it as a pdf my side, if you want, drop me a PM and will email the file, 12MB though, I don't have a problem, just make sure your mailbox is happy.

Can also drop box it for anyone interested.

Price point wise...SLX is the winner. Else shoot the lights out and go XTR.
