I have some WTB SpeedDisc All Mountain, 32-hole rims. I completely pretzelled my front rim a few months back, yes its been that long. Im desperate to get riding again. But alas I dont have a huge amount of spare cash to drop on a new rim etc right now. (I just bought a house)

sooo, this is kind of a 2 part question.

1) can anyone suggest a cheap relatively hardly, its an all mountain bike, rim with an ERD of 541mm

Basically I want to use as many spokes as I can from my old bike (so I can save some precious pennies) front hub is a WTB 20mm

2) is this rim beyond repair...

Or am I just being silly. Should I just consider

with a new set of spokes

Why don't you look out for a second hand wheelset on the hub. Could pick somthing up for under 1K. Pity you are so far away, I have an old DT Swiss XT wheel set with centre lock and tires you could have for 1K.

you see i have 20mm through axle

i have been offered a front rim from my friends old GT but ill have to get the whole thing respoked anyway as the hub wont be compatible with my forks.

then i just start thinking maybe i should drop the extra 400 odd and get a purpose built rim issue is just money

Have you tried to get it straightened? A colleague did that to his Game special and Evans Cycles managed to get it straight. Think it cost around R60. Good 2 Go Cycles in Pinetown will build a wheel for R150 labour if you supply the parts. You could use the existing hub and build it across onto the rim from the GT...

rim is pretty buckled just worried if straightened itll do the same at the slightest bump.

Ill have a look at replacing. not keen on crc due to delivery times, but if i have to i shall

R208 for a new rim vs trying to straighten one.... i would not trust the straightened one much for very long - better to get a replacement - even if you source locally.

Loosen all the spokes on the pancaked one, flatten the tire and see if you can get it close to straight by bending it by hand first - if it goes flat enough it should be fine to re-true while you wait for a replacement.

By the time a rim looks like a very expensive potato chip it really can't be saved. Steel rims on the Game specials can be sorted because of the nature of the metal itself and because most steel rims are single wall.

If this happens on the trail and you need to get back to the car you can bend a lot of that back by taking the wheel out the frame and leveraging the wheel against a tree or similar object to straighten it enough to fit back in the fork.

thanks for all the help.

I have a wheel in the garage I was trying to sell which came off my trail bike, so it is broader and a stronger rim. it Is a dt Swiss hub with 20mm thru axle and a mavic rim, if you re interested. I think a 317. Yours for a good price, like R 400.

Btw never try and straighten a rim that toasted. When it does go back, and It will go back and your face will find another piece of the floor like when the first accident happened...

PM me if you are keen. In Gauteng though.
