Endomondo accuracy?

Just checking too see what the other hubbers think of this.

I use Endomondo Pro on my BB9900. I like this app for its functionality and for keeping some kind of history of my rides. I do a short route 3 times a week (around 18km) and push as hard as possible, and then obviously longer ride on a weekend

Just a few oddities that I found:

  • Same route, same everything: different route profiles as well as small variances in distance
  • This morning it calculated that I did 13kms instead of 19 (added a small loop)

Now what might be the reason for this? I know this is just supposed to be a phone application for recreational purposes, but still. Or should I just shut up and get a Garmin Edge 500?ph34r.png

any unit/app that use a GPS to determine distance and altitude will sometime have inaccurate data. The distance issue is due to reception/signal in most cases. I only use GPS for mapping my ride but not for actual distance or profile stats.

eish, just checked the map of this mornings ride, seems like the countdown got stuck and only started way into the ride....oh well will check settings and give it another go tomorrow morning.

I had a Sony Ericsson. Sometimes it looked like it lost signal and just pull one straight line for a few km. My Nokia is far more accurate, but the elevation profile is still useless. For a more accurate profile, open the gxp file in google earth. Not 100%, but better.

Elevation using a gps signal is always a bit dodgy. The satellites struggle to pick up the small changes in angle. The better GPS units generally use a barometer to work out altitude changes and ride profiles.

In general my route accuracy is pretty good otherwise.

Bite the bullet. Get the Edge

Very good responses explaining it to a non-tech junkie like me. But Alsoran gave the answer I was looking for! I'm off to write to Father Xmas...

I ride with a samsung S3 and my mate rides with a garmin. if we compare routes my samsung updates every few seconds and puts in a lot of straight lines where the track curved. His Garmin is far more accurate. I will list 13kms he will list 15kms on the same route purely because of that. I would say the Garmin is the way to go.

I find my S2 to be extremely accurate (route, not altitude). But maybe I'm just so slow my phone can't make mistakes clap.gif
