Anyone out there had problems with Polar back up ?

My 725S went in for repair - bust infrared window and water leak

Came back with new O-ring @ R140 but not working - completely dead !

When I sent it back to Polar I was told it's an old unit (I've had it for 7 years) and they don't stock any spares

They also stated there was water damage - hello !! that's why it went in

They said there was nothing they could do !!!!

I have a 34 year old VW Kombi and I can get any spares I want and Poar recon a 7 year old "state of he art" heart rate monitore is obsolete ????

Oh and they stated that seeing as I had had so much usage out of it I couldn't expect anything more >>>w.t.f. !

I also have a 725something at home. I didn't get it brand new so when it got to me it wouldn't work. It would NEVER EVER connect to my pc. And I'd do 2 workouts and it will be full of data. So I understand your frustration. I had to just put in the cupboard and forget about it.

But even though I had no joy with the 725 I went and bought a FT7 this year, which is purely a HR monitor. It is the cheapest Polar that can connect to a PC. I am quite happy with it. However after 6 months my flowlink (the new transmitting device) stopped working. I took it to the shop I bought the watch from, they sent it in for me and 2 weeks later I received a new one. I guess they haven't figured out how to make transmitting devices that last.

I was told at the shop that Garmin has even worse customer service than Polar but I have heard good things about Garmin's service. Makes it very hard to decide what new unit to buy.

I've had exceptional customer support from Garmin (and posted about it here a few months back), even better than the good (at the time) customer support I received from Polar when I had one a few years ago.

I think it's a bit unfair to criticise Polar for a lack of spares. I reckon it would be difficult to find spares for any consumer electronic device that is seven years old. That's the price of progress. The comparison with VW is a bit spurious. It's relatively easy to measure and make generic copies of those spare parts, while the nature of mechanical components means that a part that fits a 1980s Kombi may still have been in use when Kombis were discontinued and may still be in use on a Polo or something today.

This seems to be a trend particularly with electronics ... they are deemed to be disposable items now.

While they may be cheaper than what they were a few years ago (7 in your case), yes, not everybody has the resources to replace them.

So it is a bit unfortunate, but as another poster said, "that's the price of progress".

I've had pretty good service from Polar - when I can I go out to Vorna Valley and wait around while they do what they need to do. That way you can at least speak to the guys and make informed decisions.

Bust IR window? Did that let water in? Then it's cooked dude. There is no fixing. Buy new watch.

That they replaced the o-ring on a bust watch was a bit lame tho, got to admit. Depends on what instructions they got with the watch tho I suppose.

PS: A replacement offer/discount may make the situation somewhat more acceptable.

No chance of that I even had Cycle Lab try this avenue with them !

I sent it in with the instruction "bust infrared window - please window & repair water damage"

I've always had good service from Polar. As far as water damage goes with electronics, when it gets wet it's dead. Don't see how you can repair those tiny chips and things. You need a microscope just to see them.

What is off is to do any repair on a dead unit. If it couldn't be repaired they should have just sent it back

How does one please a window?

I think they struggled to understand the instruction.

Dude, electronics are not like 35 year old vw buses. Water in electronics is death. You can't do repairs, you just chuck the internals away and put new in, as they cannot be fixed or diagnosed.

Stocking 7 year old electronics is like stocking tone arms for turntables. Someone does but it's not a business other than for enthusiasts. Buy a new one or claim on insurance. I am sure you don't have a 7 year old pc.

Garmin service is plenty good, and I have gone from Polar to Garmin because of ease of use. Garmin gave me a trade in on a well used 305 against the latest. 800, which I was we'll cuffed with. No problems with either Garmin or Polar service butbGarmin devices are better.

love my 720 but yes they no longer have spares. I have an additional old one with water damage so they "harvest" workable spares from that one when needed. can not expect them to continue support for such old electronic stuff. would be nice though if they had more outlets that can do repairs like in Midrand its a mission to getnthere and sending in via bikeshop then more than a week without monitor and as per above eg lots gets lost in translation
