I do not really have an order of preference.

I have however differentiated that Thaba is great for explosive power development, the short steep nearly impossible climbs, that tests your technical prowess in addition to your explosive power is unparralelled.

Kings have some great climbing, it's long, and it's tough. And the downhill sections are my most favoritest of them all. so for Endurance elevation training with some nice technical challenges, little beats 2 laps of kings for me.

VG is a great venue for mixing it up, great singletrack, lotsa climbing if you so choose, and wicked downhill. the nice thing for me about VG, is you can make it as hard or as easy as you want. Lots and lots to choose from.

If you do not have lots of time, a quick lap of the blue around rietvlei gets the heart pumping and the pores sweating nicely.

I have only ridden a small piece of Kings in the Silverstar mtb race, I would love to go ride there again. Is it safe enough to go ride on my own and are the trails marked?

A ride to and back from Thaba, with all the blue loops and and a lap of the green loop whilst there, ticks just about all the boxes I need ticking from a technical and training perspective.

I rode the full length of the spruit from Emmarentia to Paulshof, and back via Alberts farm and N'cliff this weekend for the first time in a long time. I'd forgotten what a good ride that can be.

I think those trails took some serious strain this weekend :(

It's gonna take a loooooong time for them to be fixed. Think I was one of the last to o through bennies bend before they changed the route. Being on the SS I tried to ride it and that hole on the corner was so deep that my front wheel buried up to the hub.

trails are marked. and other than falling off and getting badly hurt, you are safe to ride there on your ace.

Kingskloof rocks... The rest are ok. Have not ridden enough of VG to comment. Your balls will end up in your throat at Kingskloof, so come prepared. Great place to ride!

So it looks like it goes down to personal choice. Kings is difficult but has a natural rugged feel to it. Thaba is relentless and makes you work but the rewards are awesome. VG mix of both... I love them all.

+1...die ou pastorie around the corner is great too, even better cheesecake than VG and the ale house also around the corner serves some really cool local brew. Had a clove beer there the last time, yum yum. You know you gonna drink some good beer when there is a Irish flag "wappering" in the wind as you drive up to it.

Where is the Ale House? Been riding at VG for about three and a half years and have never come across it, I've been missing out.

VG has to be my No.1 then King's, I still need to visit Thaba.

Ok so you finished your ride...driving back to jozi. Pass pecanwood and the shopping centre on your left with the wimpy. Go up the hill and at the bottom of the downhill / crossing the river there is a turn-off for a gravel road on your left...by the bundhu bar sign. Turn in there and pass bundhu bar(which will be on your right)....travel for about 3 km and on your left there will be a road that leads to the ale house....look out for the vierkleur and irish flag next to each other. Dirk is the owner and makes a mean pizza(broederstroom special) and is also the brewmaster. Very lekker spot

I don't remember that bit. At least they are smooth I suppose. ;)

Perhaps that's why I use a dropper post.

And yes. I bet you guys have not ridden even a third of Erik's trails. There is stuff there much tougher and more technical than Thaba or Kingskloof.

Perhaps it's due to me going over the handlebars quite a bit there ;)

I found it wild and lots of fun. Maybe just me :)

personally i say vg is the best based on the fact theres all sorts of riding, theres nothing better than going out out vg forgetting about the city life and jhb madness, and sweating out your weeks stress especially up that new loop after greek church descent, you can keep yourself entertained for many hours provided you fit enough and carrying enough fluids in summer it cooks there!

thaba is nice , lots of steep short bursts, as well as some nice gradual climbs like twin towers, also based in a reserve some buck cruising around, thaba will test your technical ability those awesum drop offs on the green and blue routes, you gotta be of reasonable fitness to complete green and blue route an awesum training ground

kingskloof i enjoyed alot, alot of climbing , some serious downhills towards the river on pebbles, nice place to climb and get the heartbeat up

2.thaba

3.kingskloof
