Event Name: 2014 Funky Fynbos Festival MTB And Trail Run, Gansbaai
When: 13 September 2014
Where: Gansbaai, Western Cape
Category: MTB

The event will indeed happen on the 13th of September 2014. It will form part of the Rockets Funky Fynbos Festival that will include a trail run on the Sunday as well as loads to do for all. Family fun!

The flagship route will be the 40km. Don't let the distance fool you, this is a tough ride, but well worth it. It is a true mountain route, the views, the natural habitat, unspoilt fynbos wilderness and the fun factor will be well worth the weekend trek. The climbs are tough, but the downhills fun, and will suite all riding styles, single track, rough jeep track and more single track!.

This year it is organised by the local farm community - so should retain it's original vibe, but with much more added!

There will be cool goodie bags (ice pack, mohair socks) at registration on the Friday. Late entries will be accepted on Saturday from 6am. More details will follow!

Here is a brief preview of the first climb and descent of the mtb route. We have added a new jump and added it to the video, as well as saved it in higher quality http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzXV8xhmZMY

Here is part three, the third climb of the 41km. Amazing views as well as a long downhill with the sea view as your backdrop. Enjoy! http://youtu.be/VEgXS2aQm7A

Part two is the downhill of the second climb - enjoy! http://youtu.be/NkN-ReM5IgU

Not sure of all the details yet, but it seems like 3 distances are planned, 10, 30 and 45. The 10 will be much the same as before, but the 30 and 45 will have some changes.

Check out the video for the first section of the longer route

Fynbos allround. Most of the route goes through fynbos conservancies.

New bits have been added - this is a fun jump to do or just to roll over. The are a few easy kickers ( small drop offs) that have chicken runs around them

Side view - if you're slow you will land on the table. If you are a bit faster you will land on the landing with a good straight slope.

For those who have done the route before, there are some changes. The Flowervalley single track will be extended to make the climb a bit easier and more fun. The weir has been taken out of the route because so few could ride it, and also because the organisers are not sure of the water levels in September. The downhill at the end has also changed, more tweespoor and less road. The route is now about 42km, but about 1400m of elevation. So expect a good long ride in terms of saddle time.

We have added a short clip of the new jump at the end of the video http://youtu.be/MzXV8xhmZMY

The local farmer has started clearing the route, but we have decided to keep the first section ungroomed. Rode it last weekend and it has a really good mountain feel. The shrub around the little jumps have been cleared and some of the more dangerous rocks removed. It is baboon land, so the odd rock might still be moved - so caution is always needed.

The weekend festival is also looking very good, lots happening, Good music, as well as loads of other activities including a trail run over a different section of the mountain.

Here is the second installment, part three! The local farmer is still clearing part of the single track on the second climb, so rode the third climb instead. The climb is has some steep bits, but for the most you can look around and enjoy the view. Saw two grys ribbokke, a Stanley's bustard and some eagle that I could not identify. The heather is truly awesome along the section that goes through Farm 215. For those that enjoy downhills, you start with a pretty intense 2 min ride after a brief respite along the top of the mountain, then a longer flattish bit before an 8 minute fly down to the farm houses along dual single track (our version of jeep track!) The tracks are not manicured, and you have to be alert and riding within your limits. Enjoy!
