Hey guys!

Saturday morning I was on my way to Jonkershoek and was shocked by the way cyclist was putting themselves in danger on the road.

REALLY!  Especially in the Stellenbosch region cyclists ride as if roads are built for cycling only!

I know mostly it's reckless drivers of cars causing deaths of cyclist, but from our side we must do our bit!

To all the roadies and mtb'ers riding on the roads:  DO YOUR PART!

A few weeks ago I saw some bloke in pink kit with dreadlocks and no helmet riding in a similar way round those parts. (cough cough..you know who you are) I suppose the dreads are so solid with sweat and goo that they must work as a built in crash helmet. Or they give the rider death immunity.

Don't worry, same story in Jhb!!!  Joined a group and these okes had the audacity to show the cars they should stop and wait for the group, although the lights were green for the cars!!!

Tuesdays and thursdays are hell at work, as one of my colleagues has to drive up Klapperkop to get to work (we work at the top), and has to do dodge-em cars with cyclists all over the road.  As a cyclist I have to try defend cyclist who cycle three abreast on winding roads and cyclist that do u-turns on blind rises and corners.  You guys know who you are and my colleague dispite my attend and calm him is losing it.

Last time I looked there was no shoulder on the way to Jonkershoek Unhappy.

...and as I cycle up there at least twice a week I  can attest that very few drivers seem to know that the speed limit all the way to Jonkershoek is 60 km/h.  Plus there is a very prominent sign that says:  Please be careful, road used by cyclists and runners.  I do not want to defend people that take up more space on the road than they need to, but the road to JH is a dead end, the only reason that you would want to drive there is if you are on your way to JH to walk/cycle/pcinic, or if you live there.  I quite frequently drive up there as well, for a late afternoon single track session, and frequently encounter groups cycling up or down.  It is difficult passing even a single cyclist if a car approaches from the front, but the very nature of the road dictates that I will wait until it safe to pass.

I've found its the road between the N1 and Stellies that people have plenty of space to cycle on the shoulder, but yet still insist on taking up half the road.  Damn irritating.  And the amount of people I saw yesterday without helmets is scary both on and off-road.

As a cyclist in Stellenboscher you have to make yourself as big as possible because the people drive like dose. You're not a cyclist, you're target practice.

I've had my back wheel driven out from under me by a student, I've been hit on the pavement by a tannie in a bakkie, and had to dive into a parked car because the Mercedes the housewife was driving entitled her to drive on the wrong side of the road.

slow cyclists must KEEP LEFT. it's also just nice (imho) to let the person know you're coming past - i automatically always call out "passing on your right" as i approach
