KC, none of us pays to use thehubsa and I'm sure there is something in the disclaimer that will protect Matt. His biggest issue right now are the people who have paid for advertising and the 36 hours that their adverts were down. The biggest problem for the hosting co is that this is not the first time thehubsa has had a problem so I wonder about their other paying customers. This is an incredibly poor show from them and if this type of situation happened wheee I work heads would roll. If they have only treated thehubsa with this lack of care then they have disgustingly poor ethics.

It is scary, it implies they did not have daily and weekly's and neither did they have monthly's.

They had next to nothing. Also means the little they have, neither did they do restore tests,

PS: Questions to admin, I thought from mentioned on last crash the DB was Oracle, ip.board says they only support MySQL...

What database is used?

What I don't understand.... how do you lose 4 months of backups?

It depends on what the service is that you take,

PaaS - Platform as a service, where the hosting just provide rack and server,

then you have allot of options all the way through to AaaS - Application as a Service.

This is what most companies like RSAWeb provides, server, PS installed, application like ip.board and the associated backend database installed,

From what Matt implied by his apology email they were responsible for everything under ip.board, he would probable have been responsible for the adds, and users and being the moderator,

Very few hosting companies still only sell rack space, they DC, so you can install your application onto one of their servers, onto one of their supported OS's, but have to integrate into their backup infrastructure.

How is the hosting company responsible for backups?

They supply the servers and the bandwidth.

Matt is responsible for the backups. Clearly these were not done.

Dude, Matt has posted his apologies on a thread he started dedicated to this. Posting questions on every single thread raised about it isn't going to help. If you have queries, suggestions, critiques on how he operates, use the mail addy he provided.

hmm

ok, clearly the temp on this thread is getting out of control.

I asked a simple question, since from a previous failure, I remember someone mentioned the backend database i Oracle, having spoken to ip.board previously I know they only support MySQL.

I have actually emailed Matt off line, offered to help (on my own dime/time) with architecture and operational procedures to prevent this from happening again, since this is my Bread and butter.

but since asking questions is not allowed anymore, in todays world, ok, I'll stop.

Don't be so sensitive. It's not that it isn't allowed. You have a query, Matt has provided his address to all members of this forum. Ask him directly.

This is also a business decision. It is possible to have near failure proof systems in place, but they cost more. Systems at the big banks for instance have cost Billions to set up over time.

For a low margin type business like this, whose only revenue is advertising I can fully understand why they don't spend hundreds of thousands on near perfect systems. There is no point having all these wonderful systems in place, but your company is loss making.

So give these guys a break. We get this for free in any case.

Morning all. hope you havea great day. @ King crispy, good morning too. :) Yeah, I probably dnt know much about law, but I havent gone running to consult the law, for a website that I am logged on to for free, that has had a major failure. You may not know much about compassion, but with my extensive experience, I think that now is time for some. Lighten up dude. PS, I ended my last comment with lol. It was supposed to show that the comment was made in light jest.

This is bulls h I t

All the lost ip.

Matt, you really cocked this one up.

Trying to contact people with whom I only had contact on the hub.

Have you got 3rd party insurance should someone wish to institute a claim against you for damages?

Matt has worked hard over the years on the Hub and i'm not sure you can blame him for this.

Why didn't you just save the details to your phone if they were so important?

Who in their right mind would use an online database to store their "so-called IP" such as people's contact details. That person should rather be sued for stupidity. Even better, they should be shot, because they are stealing oxygen.
