While talking coconut oil, slight hijack, has any one else noticed the coconut oil getting softer by the day? Spring must be around the corner! Can't wait. Although there seems to be another cold front heading our way over the weekend. We have a training camp planned at Fouriesburg this weekend. I'ts gonna be a cold one!

Liquid at 24 degrees.... Which means it is still solid in my neck of the woods... ;)

I might have missed it, but where is a good place to buy coconut oil? I found some at dischem and it seems expensive. It's also in a plastic container (would prefer glass - no leaching of bpa)

I don't think you'd find find 1l anywhere in glass. Crede's 500ml comes in a jar but their 1l is in a plastic tub.

Where I buy mine, it is R151 per litre tub.

Hello Guys,

Can anyone recommend a doctor in Sandton /4ways area that has knowledge about this diet and cholestrol. I dont trust conventional doctors and really want to understand the whole thing.

I got a few friends together and did a bulk order (25l) earlier this year. Shipment included it worked out at under R80.00 per liter for the organic virgin (not the odourless type). I like the taste of coconut. They do have a minimum value to qualify as bulk order. Best to contact them and get the details.http://www.credeoils.../bulk-oils.html

Any idea as to the shelf life of coconut oil - don't want to go and buy bulk and have it go off?

There's an expiry date on the bottle, but as long as you keep it in moderate conditions it should last long enough for you to buy in bulk. I am still using oil I bought last year.

One Americano with cream for breakfast, another mid morning and mid afternoon and sometimes a little espresso at night. If I know food will be scarce during the day (eg a day travelling to JHB or similar), then I'll add coconut oil in the morning cup.

A word of caution though ... I have hit a serious fat loss plateau and am starting to think it may be the coffee :( Having regulated the alcohol and food intake carefully already, coffee is the last option on the list.

Question on coffee consumption:

How many cups do you drink per day with cream and trimmings? :)

None... usually. But in the last two weeks, about 4 a day, only with full cream milk though.

Coffee has a distinct BG raising effect in me, so DaleE if you suspect it is the coffee, you may be right.

I have "normalised" my diet as much as I can, being away from home for 2 weeks, and noticed in the last few days that I have been getting these energy dips throughout the day. Only when I started replying to this did the penny drop that those dips come about an hour after the coffee....

Joined you all on LCHF about 6 weeks back and lost 2kg. Over the past 2 weeks, nothing! Goal is another 5kg.

Using MyFitnessPal to monitor calories with my goal set to 2160 kcal (without exercise). Mostly my consumption is below this.

Any idea if my goal (kcal) is to high ?

You are going to need to share lots more info before anyone can make a determination on calories. Weight, body fat %, caolie breakdown, etc.

.... even then, there are 2 schools of thought here:

1. Calories don't count. This always relies on the assumption that you are getting <5% of those calories from carbs, around 75% from fat and the rest from protein, AND that the fats are good quality ones, not trans or poly fats. There was a book "eat fat and grow thin" a while back that subscribed to this view.

2. Calories do count. The basic equation of energy in, energy out is considered sacrosant by some very smart folk. The problem I have with this approach is that measuring calories is only fun for a while. My advice if you believe calories do count is; do it religiously for a month and you will soon learn what foods have many calories.

Other thing to watch for is too much protein in the diet. 0.8 - 1.2 grams per kg of LEAN body mass is about right for most folk. This includes cyclists with 10-15 hr/week training schedules.

I have also stalled (lost 15kg over that last 18 months, went on holiday for a month, put back 4kg, and now can't shift even 1 gram), but have found an interesting book by Jenny Rule - Diet 101, the truth about low carb diets. She specifically discusses weight stalls ... only just started it so cant really give feedback yet.

PS: I've had coconut oil in rooibos and it was very nice!
