not to rain on your parade, but when the bicycle industry starts to copy the expensive packaging of the snake oil audiophile/cable industry I have to start questioning the sanity of it all. Margins must be pretty high when you can do this.

I had the same sentiment - I did ask the rep if I could get 20%off if I returned the briefcase.

Jip, its only so that when you bend over to pick up the "briefcase" you are in the perfect position for a good shafting!!!!

Over R8K for a rear shock. These prices are getting a bit idiculous.

Complete standard OEM disc and brakepad replacement on a Nissan Skyline GTR is R6K, just for some context.........

Economies of scale.  Which is why I keep arguing we need consistent standards sooner rather than later because component manufacturers have to currently cater for a million little variances in standards.

Couldn't agree more. Thanks heavens sense is starting to prevail and we're seeing more and more bikes launched with the good ol' faithful threaded BB.

And to this point - how serendipitous

Sorry I am just pissed off because I am trying to sell a bike (which I feel is great value for money) and getting nowhere because as these new prices go up, so the resale value seems to fall through the ground into a great gaping abyss. It's seriously depressing!!!!! And confusing too, surely the 2nd hand market should be thriving???

Rant over, Nice shock BTW that DVO. Always liked their products.

Personally, I think a lot of people are struggling to come to terms with what constitutes a "reasonable" sum for a good 2nd hand bike, when just a year ago the same bike could have been bought for the same price new.

Again, using my bike (reign advanced 1 2015) as an example. Retailed when I bought it for R 50 / R 55k or so. But current price for 2016 / 2017 version is 75-80k. That means that the newer version would cost more 2nd hand than what I paid for mine new. And all that is different is the paint job. If you apply the same across manufacturers, it's the same. I'd have to spend an additional 10-20k over what I could sell my bike for, just to get the same level bike a year on - in the 2nd hand market.

Jip, basically my scenario.

Obviously all the tyre kicking time wasters don't help, rock up twiddle their thumbs then make an offer equivalent to basically kicking you in the balls!!!

Throw a few Nigerian "paypal" scammers into the mix and you start to wonder if it'sall really worth it

You are OBVIOUSLY not using Hublogic here....

I am sure I read something somewhere written by a very knowledgeable hubber about the second hand value of bikes starting at 50% of their retail value and then deducting from that based on age and condition..... (I'm too lazy to search but I know it was a long topic of discussion a while ago) No way your second hand 1 year old could cost more than your existing whip was new dude (unless of course you stole your to start with)

(not sure if just the first bit or everything should be in Comic Sans.........)

Ja, I reckon you're bit unlucky.  That's a lot of bike for what you're asking.
