lol. so how much commission do you really pull from them? :P

Hahaha. I love my hopes.

As far as the OP goes I've only ridden with Shimano once and those were saints. I didn't like the lever feel but I've done a parking lot test on the new stuff and it feels amazing. Certainly better that Avid IMO. But that's only a parking lot test.

On a general note I've always been a sram/avid guy but the new Saint and Zee stuff I really approve of.

Where does XO fit in? They feel very similar to elixir 5's that I used on a loan bike a few weekend ago.

Saying deore is ***, in all honesty I preferred my old previous gen Deores to these XO brakes...

the Elixir 5s came with my giant: my word, those brakes are stupendously good! Ridiculously effective stoppers. When I switched to the X0 Trails, I realized I had materially done nothing other than spend more money. Yes, Elixir 5s are that good.

But, the X0 Trails are animals. Right up there with Codes. Mean muthatruckstoppas

Borrowed a stumpy with 5's on and was not impressed, the XO have the same feel. Slid on my ass today because the rear brake wasn't strong enough to bring the front down in a manual never mind stop me. Going to get them bled tomorrow and try run them in over the weekend. If they still don't feel good for me they will be up for sale... :whistling:

Who of you are using avid Brakes or shimano brakes and what's your views? I just fitted XO brakes and I must say I find my SLX way more responsive!

Ok, so based on what I own/have owned

  • Hayes Stroker Trail - decent power, no feel.
  • Avid Juicy 5 - Simple. Effective. Fit and forget.
  • Formula Oro Puro - Run! Run away from these! When they work they are pretty decent... but that's when/if
  • Avid Juicy Carbon (7's) with Goodridge - Simple. Powerful. Plenty of feel.
  • Avid Code (2013) - DAMN! Hold onto your dentures when you brake cos these things could stop a taxi at an orange traffic light! Felt too "on-off" at first, but once you get used to them, they're awesome!
  • Hope Tech M4 EVO - I hate them... cos I can't afford to have them on all my bikes! Seriously my favourite brake. Lever feel, power, build quality... the M4's have it all!
  • Hope Mono Trials - (not that these should go on any enduro bike) but they share a caliper with the mighty V2's. I have yet to learn how to use them properly, but it seems they're far maore capable on a trials bike than I'll ever need.
  • Avid Elixir 7's - bought some yesterday... so lets wait and see!

So yes, I have never owned shimano brakes. To be honest I don't feel a need to. There are a few things about the shimanos that I'm not a fan of

  • No flip-flop design. So if you ride "moto" or bail and scratch your levers, you can't just swop sides and flip.
  • The look. Really, to me they look odd with the master cylinder on top on the lever. To m it seems like a magnet for damage during a bail.
  • Lever feel. Some people like that they feel different. But those people have never felt a Tech Evo lever.
  • Every second yahoo has Shimano brakes, and those with XT or XTR could have bought Hope, but went with shimano cos they don't know any better and their LBS sells the hell outta them (like 29ers)

So yeah, if I had money... Hopes all round. Superior build quality. nearly everything on them has a spare and is replaceable. They're "blingable" with the addition of different colour piston bore caps, levers, master cylinder caps. An they work and feel pretty darn good.

But I can also say that I've been more than happy with the Avids I've owned to date... I hope these Elixir 7s doint spoil that.
