So, I went to check the nr of registered athletes.....and there are still 33 spots available.

I was nr 126 on the list and received my email last week thursday. How can there still be so many spots available, if there are 600 people on the waiting list?

Was it a big hype to get entries, with the "hope" not to get an entry....and now that there are entries available people dont pay? Or is it that people now finally get the entry but doesnt have the cash right now to enter?

do they not reserve spots for pros maybe?

Yip, agree that it is paid and confirmed. However, athletes have 24 hrs to pay. If people are hardup for entries why not pay and get it over and done with. I really wanted an entry, and paid within an hour of getting the email. If i was nr 126 and got an email in 2 days, how many people have actually not taken up the offer in the last 7 days?

I'm guessing quite a few. R4300 + flights + hotel + whatever is a lot of money. It's one thing to register, another to actually make the payment.

With the selling out of IRONMAN South Africa, the event has now reached an exciting evolution in the next chapter of the iconic event by introducing changes to the race course.

Reaching 2000 athletes has prompted race director Paul Wolff to restructure the course in accordance with a number of international IRONMAN races.

Once a race reaches over 1800 athletes on the course, certain changes are necessary to enhance safety and ensure a fair race for athletes.

This is the standard measure already taken by the biggest IRONMAN races around the world. The major changes are on the swim and bike courses with the swim becoming a single loop 3.8km sea swim and the bike course becoming a two-loop course of 90km each while the run course remains the same still allowing the athletes to soak up the crowd’s energy along Marine Drive.

The new course will mean less congestion during the swim and less drafting on the bike course.

“Having staged this event in Port Elizabeth for the past nine years we want to thank our athletes for their support over the years. It is due to this fantastic support that we are now sold out. Because of these numbers we have had to adjust the course for safety as well as fair competition,” says IRONMAN South Africa race director, Paul Wolff. IRONMAN South Africa will reveal the new route and details thereof within the next three weeks.

Interesting. They can rearrange the course anyway they like. I still have to be able to swim 3.8k, bike 180k en run 42.2k by April. This might help with the drafting problem though.

Pity as was always nice to see your family and mates as they came out the water half way through the swim and also a couple of times on the bike lap!

3.8km Single loop.....what about safety, thought that is why they had a double lapper.

60km loops vs 90km....fail to see what difference that would make.

So at least the run is the same...would be nice if they could change that, the section behind the university

Think the best way is to stagger the start, which would never happen.

But then I have never been a Paul Wolf fanboy
