There was minimal drafting at 70.3 this year due to the changes they made.

Saw a little this year at IMSA on the stretch down the coast into the wind.

Remember, you can't call it a PB if you draft.

What changes did they make Dave?

I really don't see how drafting can make a difference whether is 2 or 3 laps....

60000m divided by 1700 competitors = 35.3m

90000m divided by 2000 competitors = 45.0m

When everyone is on the course, there is just more space for them. Less inadvertent drafting. People who do it deliberately will do so whatever the course.

The difficulty is on the first lap when people are coming out the water together. One or two swim laps is unlikely to spread the field out much more.

These IM refs  , every year PW stands up and proclaims that he will live and die by their decisions. Fair enough. But they are inconsistent and rude most of the time, in fact that goes for most IM and Tri races. I look at these guys and wonder if anyone ever did any triathlons before and understand what goes into what we do. Technically we all draft and block at some point for seconds in a race, they see that snapshot and not the whole incident.

I totally agree. Experienced that 1st hand at 5150 Germiston.

Ironman SouthAfrica announces new route:

1 Lap swim (3800m) & 2 Lap bike. Elevation gain 809m per lap. Comparisons with East London 70.3 (1171m) per lap and World70.3 in Las Vegas (823m) per lap.

Beautiful new course, but challenging so ensure you include lots if Hill training.

Okay now that we know there is some climbing involved----I think most TT bike's have got as 53/39 chainring and matbe a 11/23, 11/25, 12/25 at the back.

Keep the same chainring but abe change to a 11/28 at the back ???

Your thoughts please !!!

There will also be 3 waves to start. Wave 1 pros then wave 2 then wave 3. I'm over it already. IMSA have got greedy again and ruined another good race just like the half.

Can someone maybe throw together a comparison of the old and new courses? Maybe I'm missing something but I do not see these new huge hills? What was the total climbing on the old course?

Agreed, the waves thing is a bit rubbish. Was nice everyone all starting at once

Why 3....what is the difference between wave 2 and 3? Elite AG's?
