I have new wheels and Joe's tubeless strips (my family bought for my birthday :) ).

Just wondering what is 'needed' on the rim (if necessary at all) before fitting the rubber strip as the spoke holes are 'open' ...... Insulation tape OK or something like gorilla/duct tape best?

Most of the wheels I have done in recent times have been with Stan's tape (that yellow stuff)and seperate valves and needed nothing more ....

Yip yellow tape + valves and sealant...you don't need anything else. You still need to tape the spoke holes if you want to use the rubber strips, it just helps a little with tyres seating on deep rims beads

I would prefer the yellow tape/valves but since they bought me the rubber strips might as well use them :)

'tape the spoke holes' is what I'm wondering about, with what ..... is insulation tape ok or must it be stronger like gorilla/duct tape?

First prize....proper yellow stan's tape...think its 22mm, but ductape will also work...Insulation tape aka electric tape...no go. The amonia in the stans will make light work of the glue on electrical tape in no time. You still need an airtight seal between the spoke holes and the rim, the rubber strips doesn't give you that, the tape does, so if you absolutely have to, use ductape as an alternative

I've used both. Depends on rims and tyres, but some tyres (maxxis monorails) on some rims (dt swiss) are so tight that you almost, but not quite, break thumbs getting them on. Any extra thickness over the joes strips makes it worse, so the thinner the rim tape the better.

I'd actually go with fibreglass reinforced rim tape that looks like sticky tape with threads in, otherwise gorilla, otherwise insulation.

With Joes strips, the sealant does not hit the rim tape, so no stress what you use.

Me - I'm a yellow tape'n'valves kinda guy - simple.

The rubber strips are not forever - the tyres evetually cut through the rubber or crease them making it really difficult to change tyres etc.

Just cos you got 'em doesn't mean you should use them....

The various bundu/ghetto versions work too :-)

As much as I am a yellow tape/valves type guy my family went to a lot of trouble to get me all those goodies the least I could do was use it but ja that's just how I roll .....

Was a tad late to go the hardware and cause I got no patience I decided to just go with the insulation tape, figured as davetapson has said that the sealant aint going near it ..... quite a job to get the Joe's tape nice and even and uder the 'lip' all the way round. Maxxis Aspen's went on relatively easy and inflated easy with the compressor. Job done  - pity I'm sick as a dog with flu so no chance I'll be riding for a few days still

backtrail I have used a set of wheels with just insulation tape/valves but over time it degrades and starts to leak and the tape's stickiness goes and it like 'narrows'. Just my experience

Aha yes i should have added that I did have to redo one as the insulation tape did lose its stickiness, the one wheel held out for around a year before,i ended up changing wheelsets.

Maxxis Aspen's

Good job!

Eldron's tip for the day - try and run Aspen's at the lowest non burping pressure you can. They get real grippy when they're softer!

Thanks Eldron, will experiment a bit with pressures

My insulation tape trick has worked like a charm on the old 26" Arches that my wench has on her bike now

Did them a week before J2C in 2012... still strong to this day

I tried the tape only route, but the holes drilled out for the valves in the rims (dtswiss) was too big for ANY valves that I could find to seal. So it's f$%@%$@%$@ Joes strips for me.

I think over the years I've spent more on Joes strips than just buying a set of tubeless wheels from CRC.

Insulation tape works well, with the rim strip you have.
