Cost of sport is subjective.

If you want to go full tilt, it's very expensive.

If you are happy to shop in the sport section of Game, its a lot more cost effective.

I can guarantee you, the enjoyment factor is just as subjective.

Certain things are non negotiable, like club memberships as posted.

the thing i like most about cycling vs golf, putt-putt, bowling, tennis etc, is that i dont have to pay anyone before i can ride my bicycle if i dont want to...

when last did you ride your sailboat to work, or to the shop.

Flat mate and I used to calculate everything to cost per minute... If we exclude all the kit involved with separate sports and just look at the cost of the day out the following few come up:

Golf: R0.60 per minute.

Bike Race: R 1.10

Running Race: R 0.40

Ride a park (Groenies etc) R 0.13

Movie (Ster kinekor): R 0.46

Driving Range: R 0.50

etc

Comrades would be interesting for the average bronze medalist

what a dumb comparison, there is no 'average spend' for most individual sports.

I can guarantee you that there are okes who spend way more on cycling than the average guys does on golf or sailing.

You can race bikes on no budget, you can also sail big boats for free.

I also don't consider petrol powered activities a sport(ok, maybe waterskiing), and horse racing..but hyell, that's where the big numbers go.

the idea was to exclude the cost of equipment and race entries and focus just on membership and registration fees. read the OP............

mmm, missing out some numbers here

if its rotax;

+- 700 per race

tyres - 1500 per set

sprokets + chains :)

fuel for the race/practice

two stroke oil

chain lube

etc

Which reminds me to get back into shape for karting ...

Yes, Rotax, the "cheapest" option.

Tyres are R2000 a set this year !!! :'(
