You may as well just ask what the meaning of life is...

That one is easier to answer!

No ONE shop is the cheapest for all items. No ONE shop stocks everythong I want. So you have to shop around.

Here are some good places to start

Online

Those are just a few (all reliable)...

then in JHB shop around the following

  • Solomons (woodmead)
  • Cajees (All over, but you gotta know what you want. what it's worth. and be willing to bargain for it, or they'll rob you blind)
  • Linden Cycles (Linden)
  • Mikes Bikes (Greenside)

Hells, I'm not going to list them all here, there are a gazillion bike shops in JHB. As I said, no ONE shop will be cheapest on everything, so shop around!

Cheap doesnt always mean best... of course the price is important... so is aftersale service...

Just saying

Another thing you need to specify is what sort of "niche" you're looking at.

No point in going to Cycle Fountain if you're wanting a Pinarello. Also no point going to Mike's Bikes if you want a Raleigh.

Stay away from Cajees. If you cant haggle and know what the price is elsewhere, your pocket will be alot lighter

hahaha! So true!

One can only get the better of them if you know exactly what you wnat and what it is truly worth.

I recently wandered into a Cajees and found some Shimano brake pads for the old 4 pot XT's. What Cajees didn't know is that they're identical to Hope M4 pads. They sold me a pair for R100 (thinking they'd never sell them cos the pads are obsolete). I went back 30min later and bought another 6 pairs (cleared out their stock) and insisted on the R100/set, even though they tried to up it once they saw there was a demand for these pads.

You gotta be very careful with them or you'll get reemed.

You forgot to add www.evobikes.co.za :)

Has anyone here ever ordered a full bike from an online site abroad?

I'd be interested to hear what the service, shipping ect was like?

And there are no duties on a full bike correct? Just VAT?

True that! I got a killer deal on tyres from Evo Bikes!

As far as I know it's 15% duty, on top of the regular VAT. Plus most international online shops that offer free shipping have an exclusion for complete bikes.

As full bike will attract duty at 20% plus vat at 15.4%.

So the chances of getting a bike cheaper online is highly unlikely...

Okay next question. Has anyone bought a bike abroad and brought it back as carry on luggage?

15% duty and the vat will then be effectively 17.5% so overall 32.5% 'tax' for the man in the street.
