+1 - the standard brakes exceed what is necessary - disc brakes have more parts = more weight - Unless you can think of a way to build a wheel without a rim you may as well use the rim for braking. JB, have you invented a rimless wheel yet? I will attend that wheel building course - Then I probably won't need to replace the spokes and nipples on my motard

However, this being said I have heard discs are an advantage on a cyclocross bike.

JB - Would a wheel with no rim accelerate better? Would it be lighter? Would you still need brakes? Maybe you should invent one for the weight weenies.

Trained in the Cape rains this past weekend and had to avoid the climbs as brakes on descending was not effective at all.

Bring in those disc brakes!

I think disc brakes on road bikes look ridiculous and is completely unnecessary... especially in SA... really!

Sure, strong reliable braking is very important, but discs is overkill.

it's not about stopping power, it's about efficiency.

and judging by how road cycling is ALL about efficiency, i find it hard to believe road cycling is so resistant to disk brake technology.

i don't think retro-fitting mtb disks on a road bike is the way forward, but rather road-specific [light/compact/efficient] disk brakes would be the way to go.

taking into account the technology available to us, applying a rubber pad to your carbon rim seems like a solution from the middle ages

No doubt that as soon as discs and *braking system becomes light enough they will become the norm in road cycling, HOWEVER, they look ridiculous on a road bike if you ask me.

*Fixed

Yip I agree

JB, I remember a post from you a long time ago, where you explained the mechanical disadvantage of cable over the advantage of hydraulic that weighed most favourably toward disc brakes. How does this affect hydraulic rim brakes and would they be better than disc on a roadbike?

I usually have to avoid climbs because of the climbs

I wonder how that front hub will hold up against the torsional forces exerted on it under heavy braking with a heavy rider on board?

I'd like to know too - I have doiscs on my CX bike, but the hubs are MTB specific hubs, thus no weight saving etc.
