I am getting gatvol of removing my tyre every time I use the IDT, to such a extend, I just don't want to use the IDT.

I have 2x10 speed cassette on a 29er.

Ok, maybe I am a cheapskate, but paying R2 200 for a indoor trainer wheel just does not make sense, there are better things to buy

I am not a bike guru, but will I be able to use a 9spd cassete or a a 26er or anything that will make it cheaper?

Maybe someone has a old one lying around the house looking for a new owner.

Dude, its been something I have been toying around with aswell

I was told by my local LBS that any road wheel will work on a 29'r frame as a indoor training wheel.

Can someone here maybe confirm this ?

26 will work fine. Look for a REALLY old cheapo rim brake wheel. 9 speed will probably shift like cr@p. Put a new cassette on your bike, old one on the trainer.

sorry to highjack thread, but how do you mount your bike on indoor trainer?thru axcle on 29 er,indoor trainer mount to quick release

Ok, so I can get a 26 and put a 10speed on. No brakes are needed, but would a rim brake wheel fit on my bike if I have disc brakes? Almost seems as if some things will be in the way, don't know. I see a 10 speed cassette is about R700 for the cheapest I can find. Still bloody expensive, do you know what the cheapest is?

The 10spd on my bike is new, not even 300km on it, so makes no sense changing that.

Zork, hope I understand your question right.

I got a extra quick release with my IDT that the IDT can clasp onto and that fits on my bike. Bought the IDT when I got the 29er so I assume the LBS gave me one that is compatible.

Looks something like this

Use an old road bike on the IDT.

I have my 1990's Cannondale 3.0 (who can remember those?) permanently set up on the IDT.

In 5 years and 100's of hours on the trainer I have only had to service the BB.

Answer: forget the spare wheel and get a spare bike.

Now that is legit hub advice

I've actually resurrected a 18 year old mountain bike I had to be used on an indoor trainer. Pulled it out the garage and it cost around R1,000 to get running again including new shifters.

Avalanche at Sportmans I saw is R1 800, that is a complete bike! A complete **** bike, but complete none the less. Does not even make any sense that the cheapest spare wheel I can find is more than that.

Maybe buy the bike from Sportmans, take the wheel and throw out the rest. Cheaper that way.

Or just ride the **** bike on the trainer. Just change out the seat and seatpost with your "real" bike for comfort maybe?

It is crazy though that you can buy a whole bike for less than a spare wheel.

there should be enough 2nd hand wheel sets going the rounds I think

Was lucky, bought a rim brake wheelset off the Hub two years ago, for R350-00 and been using that since, no hassles
