I have just done a solo mtb ride around Waterkloof air force, Irene farm and through to old Jhb road back down to my house. Riding along on the dirt next to the roads, I prefer to keep of the right of the roads facing oncoming traffic. This way I don't have to look over my shoulder all the time to keep an eye on the cars coming from behind me.

On my ride I went passed a couple of riders going in the opposite direction, most of which keep to the left of the roads.

Which side is the norm to ride on and does it not make more sense keeping to the right in order to see oncoming traffic better?

Keep left

The other day in Glen Marais some bright spark on his mtb came flying around the bend on the wrong side

He almost played Aston Villa with my left fender which was only avoided by a swerve to the right by myself

Keep left! How many times have I alnost collided with guys on this exact route and then they look at me like I am on the wrong side of the road. The rules stay the same regardless of which side of the road has the nicer single track.

And please be aware of those idiots in those little 4 wheel buggy's in the veld next to the airforce base - they ride like maniacs.
