Hello Hubbers

I recently acquired a Fox Float RP2 rear shock from a fellow hubber, which is great, but this evening when I tried to fit it to my bike I noticed a problem.

The shock that is currently on the bike has mounting hardware that is designed to work with that shock only (DT Swiss) and use 6mm bolt to.

The Fox shock came with mounting hardware that works with 8mm bolts.

So I figured one of the following would work:

  • Get new Fox hardware that works with 6mm bolts.
  • Find an insert that has outer diameter of 8mm, an inner diameter of 6mm and is 22mm long
  • Find bolts which have an 8mm shaft with a 6mm threaded tip.

Which option will be the best, where can one order bushes, can inserts be machined...etc?

Please help, like a little kid I NEED to test out my new toy!

Thanx

ALLMTB

Fox has the hardware you need, 22mm x 6mm, cost is about R200 an end.

Only problem is, Fox don't have stock of the 21.8mm or 22mm so you might have to get the 22.2mm. This is the 22mm set.

You might be able to find the old style 2 piece units is aluminium at your LBS. But they don't work as well.

iou forgot to mention that Fox (i.e, Omnico) don't have anything useful on stock. No reducers, no nothing.

I've ended up making these things on my lathe for my customers. I think Omnico is the most useless Fox distributor in the world. And that includes Zimbabwe.

Hi carbon29er

Thank you for the info.

I measured the width again and it seems like the 22.2 kit might actually work.

Any idea where I can order it from?

Thanx Johan, as a last resort I was considering lathe route but I don,t know anybody in JHB north/westrand who has a lathe or the materials...hint hint.... :whistling:

Any idea where we can get the 5 piece mounting kit other than Omnico. I know it's manufactured by Igus but you have to get all the individual parts sizes to order each piece seperately. BTW i enquired today from my favourate LBS. the price is R400 per side in the size that i need.

Omnico do have the 22.2mm in stock. You LBS can order from them.

Fox uses 1/2" DU bushes with 1/2" mounting hardware.

This means that these ones should work:

I also like the 3 piece mounting hardware from Rockshox. I use them on my Monarch.

The new Fox mounting hardware is very expensive and you wait forever to get stock(and then they wonder why you buy online).

Unfortunately locally Rock Shox don't import mounting hardware, they rely on Omnico....

At R400 a end your LBS is having a lend of you.

Yup, they definitely saw you coming...

Aside from that, my R0.02 worth on the subject:

DU bushings and 3 piece hardware are the way to go. Shock mountings don't move enough to get the grease in roller bearings to move to where it needs to be, so they'll wear quickly, and 2 piece reducers are prone to flex and wear.

In the next week or so I'll have stock of bushings and reducers in any size you can think of at reasonable prices, I just have to get a few more bits made up. I'm also having a look at the Igus system, I'll update as soon as I've checked it out properly.

Thanx for the feedback. Please can you keep me updated regarding this issue, seems like sourcing the right bushing and stuff is a mission on its own.

I hope you asked them if they'll be so kind as to lube you before they F__k you.

I paid R200 from Solomons for my polymer DU bush kit last year.

Times must be tough in that shop or the oke wants to go retire early

I replaced the mounting hardware on an RP23 just a few months ago.

I went into Mike's Bikes. They had a whole bunch of them on the rack. they didn't happen to have the exact one, so ordered one in. It was there in 2 days and cost me about R70 (for one side).
