The stronger you get, the more you can choose at what intenity you will ride a particular hill. But you will still likely push it till it hurts (especially in the company of othe riders).

No, I think that is wrong. I am honest with my wife and she knows precisely that all new bikes cost R4000, all stage races R1000 and one day races R100. No need to over complicate the matter.
