MTB Tyres

Hello Hubbers

 

Trying to decide between the two following sets of tryes

 

1. Maxxis Crossmark UST 29er tyres

 

2. Continetal X-King Protection 29er

 

generally looking for reasonably priced tryes that will hold post a conversion to give a steady ride and no stress going forward

Crossmark on the back. Good grip and they last.

Mountain King or something more aggressive on the front for grip.

I am currently running a Conti X-King up front and Racing Ralph on the back. So far no troubles either way. Sat had plenty thorns etc. and I came through unscathed. I have seen some deepish sidewall scratch marks from rocks on the Conti - but nothing that is causing me to worry. I don't particularly like the handling on the front - altough with a slightly lower pressure they are doing a bit better. I won't put the conti on again - maybe as a rear, still trying to decide on the front. (Apparently u need to go more aggresive on the front wheel and more for Rolling Resistance on the rear).

 

The Maxxis UST apparently have a fairly good Rolling Resistance and are well rated, but since my 26er have never really liked Maxxis from a handlinhg perspective (6 years ago) and have not bothered to try them again. My best is still the Sagaru (or however you spell it), but I struggle to get them on and off the rim without much stress and sweat - (Crest rims). Would hate to be on a race needing to get them off for a tube fit or something - I can't carry enough tyre levers.

 

So no real help....but on popularity - think the Maxxis

Specialized Fast Trak... Cheapest best tyre you will ever buy.

 

I can't put a specialised on my Scott - would just be wrong.....

+1 for Specialized Fast Track at the back and Ground Control on the front. The 2bliss ready versions are significantly lighter than the Maxxis (granted they are full UST), relatively cheap and grips very well. Continentals (Race Kings and X-Kings) are great if you do most of your riding in a straight line.

i've got a gound control at the back and it's a lekker grippy tyre, but seems a bit puncture prone (compared to the crossmark).

I wrestled a saguaro onto an arch.

 

One ride i ran out of slime and the tyre would not hold air. I decided to ride to the car, I rode slowly. No issues. Got back, slapped in a snolly, put in some slime. and the tyre is still great.
