Hi Everyone

So i don't know a lot about these thick axles. I know they give a lot more stiffness which is better.

So say I want to upgrade to one of these what are my Requirements on the bike ?

What do I need and what do I need to buy extra for the Axle to be installed properly ?

 Thanx

You actually need a specific 15mm thru axle fork. You can't convert an existing fork to take that axle unless you change the lowers. Then you'd also need to rebuild your wheel around a new hub that can take the 15mm axle standard. Again, you need a specific hub for this as most qr hubs cannot be converted to take the 15mm axle.

You will need to buy a new 15mm thru-axle fork - both Fox and Rockshox have 15mm thru-axle forks. Then you might need a new hub also, depending on whether or not your current hub can be converted to 15mm thru-axle. To convert a hub to 15mm you need special adapters.

This is what the Stans ZTR hub adapters look like:

Firstly, you need a fork that accommodates that particular through axle. Secondly, you need a front hub that either accommodates a through axle or that can be adapted to accommodate one.

My Rear hope hub was easily adapted from a Q release to a 15mm .I have a bike with 15mm front and rear and a bikewith Quick release front and rear .The difference is not worth buyig a new fork

Sorry no as far as I know there is no conversion possible with adapters with Shimano hubs. The hub will need to be replaced.

When you go 20mm will you readily be reaping the of a stiffer front end.

What surety if riding do you do, what fork do you have, do you have a tapered or straight steerer, what is your wheel build. All these factors combined will determine your front if bike stiffness.

I have just moved from a bike with 150mm travel fork, qr and straight steerer to a 160mm fork, 20mm axel, 36mm stanchons, 1 1/5th steerer and a good wheelset. The difference in this combination is amazing

If you are running 100mm though on your bike and you are ok slashing out a few thousand for a new fork and either a front wheel rebuild or a new wheelset, then go for it....but in all honesty, given you have a decent fork already then you are all good with the qr setup you currently have. Leave the axel setup for when the new bike comes in life.

You don't need a new fork, you can just change the lowers. You will need to rebuild or replace the wheel though.
