A few years ago when I was shopping for an All mountain rig, there used to be lots of options. Gt Force, Specialized Enduro, Mongoose Teocali, Scott MC50, Intense, Ellsworth..... You dont see most of these any more, let alone a range of All Mountain rides. Am I missing somthing?

Well if I may shed some light on the Meta AM

I have now spent some time on a Meta AM 2 (about 1600km ridden) and below is some of my findings

THIS BIKE STRAIGHTS UP ROCK!

Sorry on a serious note

After reading some reviews I decided to go for the AM 2 as on the 3 there is an issue with the rear shock that isn't valved right and has issues blowing though its mid travel but apparently this can be fixed.

The original headset is shocking and is a cheap Cane "Creek" variant that got notchy super quick.

The Fox 32 fork was well just meh and didn't inspire any confidence when pointed down.

The original tyres are cheap single ply OEM variants and I removed them before even riding the bike.

The rest of the spec on the bike I was pleasantly surprised with and in retrospect never should have removed the Formula brakes.

This bike climbs like a goat and with the rear shock setup right you hardly notice any pedal bob when pointed upwards.

It rails turns like no bike I have ever had and this bike will reward you the more you lean it over.

Sending it down a hill makes me question why I ever bought a bike with 200mm travel as this bikes 160mm travel feels limitless and soaks up the big hits.

Hope this helps a bit and let me know if you have any other questions

Yeah, how does the bikes rear suspension handle braking during descents.

the current 2012 AM3 im looking at comes with the fox float RL rear sus and fox 32 float RL150mm, is it these components that have issues?

I'd say there are more AM bike options than ever.

I know the local market may seem desolate, but consider the following

  • Santa Cruz Bronson
  • Santa Cruz Heckler
  • Santa Cruz Nomad
  • Morewood Jabula
  • Morewood Sukuma
  • Nuke Proof Mega
  • Commencal Meta AM
  • Commencal Meta SX
  • Giant Trance 27.5
  • Specialized Enduro
  • Specialized Stump Jumper EVO
  • Black Market Roam
  • Whyte 146
  • Dartmoor Wish Enduro
  • Yeti SB 66
  • Cannondale Jekyll
  • Scott Genius
  • Pyga One Fourty Pascoe
  • Rocky Mountain Altitude
  • Rocky Mountain Slayer
  • Ibis Mojo HD

Those are just a few off the top of my head, all available locally through one channel or another

According to www.commencal.co.za

The fork is the same on both models, rear shock on AM2 is RP2

Wheels: AM3: Mavis XM119; AM2 :Fulcrum Red Power XL

Drive Train: AM3: X5/X7 mix; AM2: X7/X9 mix

Mongoose:AFAIK the Teocali is still around,

Scott: now has the Genius models,

Specialized: has the Enduro still (different wheelsize tho),

GT: Force has morphed a bit, no more Sanction. New Force takes over and is NICE but >R60k

The Sensor uses the new suspension design, travel up to 130mm, R35k and up

Intense: They'll have something

Ellsworth: They must still be around

Intense has the Tracer... and the tracer 275. And the Carbine.
