Just got off the phone with my lbs and they have indicated I need to replace the "freebody" on my bike as it is well worn apparently. At a cost of R600. Can anyone enlighten me as to what a freebody is and did I make the right call in replacing it? I just sent my bike in for a tune up for the C De C tomorrow....

The freehub body is the thing that the cassette (rear sprokets) are mounted onto. It is part of your rear hub, and can be made from either titanium, aluminum or steel. It can wear out due to a number of reasons, but usually its not sealed properly and dirt gets inside and destoys the internals.

I would post a pic, but this site is saying

isn't it the part that goes grrrrrrr if you are going real fast?

The part your gears go on, but what wheels do you have?  Made of gold or Ti / Alu?

Thanks Guys. I think I understand....

The wheels are Mavic SSC SL's running Campag.

I have told them to go ahead and replace. Don't want any mishaps tommorrow Tongue

Sounds about right for a new campag body.

Mavics are really easy to service yourself though. When you feel the new ones making a really loud click, or spinning a bit rough, all you need are two allen keys and you can remove it. Unscrew the rear axle bits, then slide off the freehub. (Just watch he little springs and pawl things that they dont go flying around) Clean all the parts off, clean the seal, and lightly regrease it and put it all back together. Its really easy.

Ive been doing that for years on my SL's and they are still perfect.
