Noob question.

How much of a difference is there between manufacturer brakes and branded brakes such as 105, Ultegra etc?

Reason for asking, is that I am upgrading from my really cheap and old Giant OCR3 to a Scott Speedster. The Scott comes with Scott branded brakes. I have seen a few 105 calipers for sale, and was wondering if there is any major difference to be had from the change (PS I dont car about the name that I am riding, or have on my bike).

Also, there are Tektro calipers on my Giant currently. Are these better than the Scott branded calipers?

Bike Manufacturer branded brakes are cheap. They are designed to lower the overall cost of the package to meet a price point.

Brakes from a specialist company or from reputable companies like Shimano, Campagnolo, SRAM are always going to be an upgrade

I fully understand that. The owner of the LBS explained that the manufacturers save on costs mainly by fitting their own brakes and cheaper wheelsets, mainly Alex Rims.

What is the major benefit of the better quality brakes, aside from better quality? I assume they are lighter. But is there a big difference in stopping power?

I went from the Scott branded tektro brakes on my AFD to ultegra. Stopping power difference was noticeable and massive. Also felt much smoother and quieter. Definite upgrade

You certainly can tell the difference between cheap brakes and expensive brakes. Cheap brakes have a spongy feel and just don't stop as well. There isn't as noticeable difference(if any) between Ultegra and Dura Ace, but those Tektro made cheapo brakes are pathetic.

Btw, thanks for the responses. I am learning more about bikes slowly but surely.

Can you scientifically quantify the difference  or is it just your 'gut feel' huh ;)

Should I send you all the articles on the internet ???

BTW I have a small gut so it's all based on scientific calculations (which you won't understand  )

yikes i said upgrade but i'll spell it out in detail.

stiffer = more stopping power

better brake pads = more power, less wear and better modulation.

less friction in the mechanism = better feel.

how you use these attributes to your advantage determines how your perceive these upgrades

As far as I know Tektro have a few different options so they could be better/worse than the Scott.

But don't worry too much about brakes, they just slow you down in any case

Yes - their racing line (TRP) are brilliant but quite expensive...

Indeed but then so does Shimano, Campagnolo and SRAM.

Often the biggest upgrade is the brake pad. The Red pads have more bite than that supplied with Force.

Record feels less spongy than Veloce

And 105 feels better than Dura Ace (flame suit on but true)

Have you ridden the dura ace 9000 bakes?? I suspect NOT.....
